I know there's been a lot of clamoring for Nicol's head, and I've been a part of it. But I will say this ...

Thanks for everything Steve. We've had a few tough years at the end, but you did help give us our best years as a club as well. Good Luck in the future ...

Absolutely. He should be remembered for his entire body of work, not just the past few years. Best wishes, Steve. Thanks for everything.

It sucked at the end, but truly a Revolution legend. I just wish it had been announced 3 weeks ago so we could give him a proper send-off

I, too, believe that it is time for the Revs to bring in a new head coach. But I agree with my fellow posters that I will miss Coach Nicol. His tenure coincided with the best years in Revs' history and was always friendly when I met him in public. I'll miss his accent and seeing his red face nearly explode on the sidelines every time he disagreed with a call -- and that was quite often.

Part of me will always be a part of Nicol's Army.

    Good luck, Steve.

Totally agree but any way one slices it, 9 years is a long long time to be the H.C. of any pro team.

It is just time for a change. Same thing going on with Red Sox. The system and players in it are not working.

Steve Nicol is one of the most tenured coach in all major sports. Not an easy feat. He did great stuff here and is respected by players and fans. He could easily find a job in MLS if he desires.

Good luck Steve. Thanks for the memories. I wish your boys could have at least pulled one out for your in the end.

Maybe we'll see him the booth someday!

Thanks Steve for everything you have given the team, much appreciated.

This better be the first in a TOTAL FO overhaul, or I'm sending my kids dvd elsewhere.

10 years is a long time for a coach in sports. In fact only 3 coaches/managers last longer than you in Boston sports

    Red Auerbach-Celtics 16 years
Joe Cronin Red Sox 13 years
    Bill Belichick 12th year

Good Luck and thank you for you time here.

Agree with everyone above, Stevie gave us some great years but the last few were not among them.

I can't imagine him as a commentator though. Nobody would have any idea what he was saying other than "Cheers" at 45' and 90'.

No ill will but I just wonder what he could offer up on a resume that would attract another team? Not player selection (more misses then hits), development of players (leave here and do good) or team results (death spiral)... it will be interesting to see if he gets another gig

Interesting tweets by Jen Chang. Nothing that we really did not know but includes some details:

Goodbye and good luck to Steve Nicol. He's owed thanks in recognition of the role he played in creating some wonderful memories. One wishes that there had been more, including a few timed so as to mark the end of his tenure.

    One down... two to go.

Though he played a significant role in the Revolution's fall from grace, Nicol was not solely responsible for the sorry state of affairs now facing the team. If Messrs. Bilello and Burns aren't shown the door as well, than Nicol's firing will amount to little more than scapegoating.

Bottom line? It is time for a clean sweep in the Revolution's front-office. Here's hoping that Bob and Jonathan Kraft are ready, willing and able to take all of the steps necessary to turn this franchise around.

It wouldn't shock me if the team didn't hire a new coach until 2012.

That's how you fire someone who has done good things for your organization.
    See: Francona and Red Sox.

I wish SN all the best, and thank him for all the good years.

I am also encouraged to see the Robert and Jonathan were actually involved in the discussion. Maybe, just maybe, they care a little bit more than we give them credit for.

"Revs had been poor lately but Nicol and his staff were seriously handicapped by New England front office's unwillingness to spend $$.
Revs turned down chance to sign various "name" players such as Robbie Fowler, Pauleta etc that had agreed to sign for Nicol over the years.
On 1 trip to South America a few seasons ago, Nicol & his staff came back with a list of 20+ players they felt would take Revs to next level. All would have been of pricey by MLS standards but affordable (one was striker Jose Sand). Revs front office turned down the entire list."

So true. It's difficult to put a ton of blame on Nicol for the Revs current state. I'm surprised he didn't say he didn't feel like he had the support of team management!

Actually this is news to me...I never knew who too blame for the lack of signings. We never had any proof it was Kraft, FO or Nicol. But if Jen's comments are true, most of the blame would be on the Kraft\FO.

@ @jenchang88 I've talked to a few agents who said corporate set-up w/ Revs/Pats created very risk-averse atmosphere. Never willing to spend.
