On Page 33 of the Official LFC Weekly magazine, there is a small sidebar piece about Nicol's success this season: Dave Well Red THERE was disappointment for former Red Steve Nicol after his New England Revolution side lost in the Major League Soccer final. Nicol, who was named MLS coach of the year in the week before the game, saw his side go down 1-0 to a Carlos Ruiz golden goal for Los Angeles Galaxy, which arrived 22 minutes into extra time. It was the first MLS championship game to be scoreless after 90 minutes. The title match was played before a crowd of 61,316 at Foxboro, Massachusetts, New England's home ground. It was a record attendance for the final. Guiding New England to the final was a significant achievement for Nicol, who only took charge of the side in May The Revolution had undergone something of a revolution with the Scot at the helm. They finished bottom of the MLS table last season and started this with only two wins from the opening seven games. He played down his role in leading New England to the MLS play-offs and on to the final. "I just came in and sorted a few things out. We basically gave everybody new responsibilities and winning a couple of games made a big difference. "We went from a team that didn't know how to win to a team that didn't know how to lose." Nicol credits his long and distinguished Anfield career with helping to form his football philosophies and principles. The Anfield way has on outlet in America, it seems. "You can't spend a long time at such a great club and not pick things up," said Steve. "When you are a player you are like a sponge and there are things I learned at Liverpool that I didn't even realise I had picked up. Nicol is happy and settled with his family in the States but still follows the fortunes of the Reds. "I watch Sky so I know exactly what is going on, I also talk to the likes of [former Reds] Aldo [John Aldridge], Jocky [Alan] Hansen and Ray Houghton quite regularly and they keep me up to speed on news. Liverpool are looking good this season."
