USL to Europe pipeline humming along... just like we all knew it would?? I'm a little surprised, but very pleased. This is an awesome new option for young players with European aspirations.
I guess it's a potentially risky move, but exciting nonetheless Castellón were just promoted to La Liga 2. They’re good enough to solidify their spot in that league. Relegation back to the 3rd tier is absolutely brutal in Spain.— Ryan Guilmartin (@ryanguilmartin) August 28, 2024
Ha. It was edited but the original title was something like "Mark Nickanich..." and I never got around to figuring out whether @BostonRed just needed coffee or was having some fun with us. In any news, cool news!
I actually think they’ll be in La Liga within 3 seasons. Haralabos Voulgaris is the owner of that club and he’ll out maneuver that league.

First start for Markanich today, and they're up 2-0 at the half. Not on the scoresheet, but he does know how to hug the goalscorer.

Only made one start since this post and has played 95 minutes in that stretch. Castellon is down to 17th place, 5 points clear of relegation.
Eventful evening for Markanich - subs on in the 82nd minute before a set piece - and immediately scores off a training ground set piece play. Then, five minutes later, heads one home -and gets a yellow that was probably for the celebration. Unfortunately, VAR rules out the goal. Then, deep into stoppage time, VAR considers, but does not give, a penalty, and it ends 2-2.
The goal: The European transition hasn’t been the smoothest for him, but former USL top scorer Nick Markanich scored his first goal for Castellon today 🇪🇸Huge goal to salvage a draw at home and keep them 6 points clear of the Segunda Division relegation zone.pic.twitter.com/Av3uKHSB2l— USMNT Source (@usmntsource) April 5, 2025
Scored the equalizer yesterday: CD Castellón on X: "85’ (1-1) GOOOOOOOL GOOOOOOOL GOOOOOL NICK NICK NICK MARKANICH CABEZAZO DEL “20” AL FONDO DE LA RED TRAS UN GRAN CENTRO DE CALATRAVA #CastellónEldense #PPO https://t.co/0csX6Y6BDE" / X CD Castellón on X: "️ MENSAJE DEL GOLEADOR EN EL DÍA DE HOY VAMOSSS, AFICIÓN #CastellónEldense #PPO https://t.co/JFTs2M7iRx" / X CD Castellón on X: "⭐️ Momento @EstrellaDammEs del #CastellónEldense ⭐️ ⚽️ El cabezazo de Nick Markanich que igualaba el partido #PPO https://t.co/98dPBIA1pN" / X Sounds like the draw saved them from the possibility of relegation.
Two matches to play and 6 points clear of the last relegation spot. Remember, 4 teams are relegated from La Liga 2. Castellon will play 7th placed Grenada next and 18th place Real Zaragoza to close out the season. Zaragoza is 4 points clear of relegation. Castellon should be a little nervous but I think they are in a good position. It would take some crazy things happening to be relegated. One point would officially secure them if my math is correct. As for Markanich, it hasn't been the easiest transition, but I don't think anyone expected it to be. However, from what you read and then translate, he's made big strides and has found himself in the rotation of players. He's had some important contributions from the bench. He's played in 12 matches with 4 starts and racked up close to 400 minutes with 2 goals / 1 assist. Best I can tell he's played mostly on the right wing as a sub and his starts have come as the centre-forward. It's success coming from the USL-C to La Liga 2 and getting minutes almost instantly. Markanich can play at this level. Assuming they survive, I can see a jump in minutes and contributions next season.
First tiebreaker in Spain is head-to-head and Castellon got a win and a draw against Eldense, so they’re guaranteed to stay up.
