Please explain if you feel the following stats are more reflective of team or individual ... -Total saves -Save Pct -Goals Against Average -Wins
Team is more important for all stats. Even if you're a brilliant goalie you have no chance to have good numbers over a whole season without a good defence. Top goalies win games, but they can't rescue a whole season. Hockey goalie is the most difficult position in sports I know though.
Yes, I know the team is a very important factor in stats, my question is which stats are more based on the individual's performance, and which or more based on the team's performance.
I don't know what to tell you Ellison. Tough question. Save Pct is the individual IMHO, Wins leans toward the team, don't know about the other 2. I'll say this though, Bruins prospect Andrew Raycroft was voted best Goaltender in the OHL about 4 years back, with a GAA near 5. Not his fault the team really sucked. So an excellent goalie can also have some bad numbers due to a bad team, but the numbers can be atrocious with a mediocre goalie.
That's difficult to answer. WINS - whole team is responsible, a great goalie can just add a few if the team is bad GAA - also depends on the team, a goalie gets more goals in a bad team, but he can't compensate all mistakes S% - rather good for the goalie if the team is bad - he's getting more shots, which increases his chances to be top in this stats even if he's getting some goals more. Saves - is basically the same as S%, of course that's good for a goalie if the team is bad. Simple answer: wins and GAA rather bases on team performance and S% as well as saves on goalie performance
obviously there is really no definite answer, I just wanted to discuss it. Save Pct - individual for me. Your team gives up 40 shots a game and you stop 36, you get a 4.00 GAA, .900 Pct, and most likely a loss. But if your team gives up 20 shots, you keep up your .900 Pct, you get 18 saves, 2.00 GAA, and most likely a Win. That is why I feel that Total Saves, Wins, GAA are team based. You can't get more saves if your team defense is allowing 20 shots a game but your GAA and Wins will most likely improve. Wins is the most obvious of the stats to be team related. GAA - tricky I would say a combo but more team, it depends how you feel about Save Pct. I think the individual supplies the save pct and then combined with the team defense you get your GAA. Again, it's all how you interpret it.
