Hey all. I am writing this in here because I know so many of you personally. Those of you whom I do not know are obviously extremely intelligent, as you are Fire fans. I'm not cross-posting to other soccer-related forums. Anyway, several of us, students and teachers, are trying to start an education/academia forum in the Not-Soccer-Related section. I know that some of you are teachers or students, so, if you think a forum like this would be valuable, please post so here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2645443&postcount=1 I've found that not too many people know that a "New Forums" forum exists, but those who have found it have responded positively to the idea. Anyway, like I said, if you think you might use it -- to talk to other teachers and students about things, to complain about a teacher or student, etc. -- then please say that they should create it. Gotta say I'm disappointed in the Fire fan turnout. Aside from a couple people who had already posted before I pimped it a little here, nobody at all backed me up. This is the last time I'll bump this. I can't believe how few of you think an education forum would be a good addition to the NSR forums. Pretty weak.
Actually, it's because I'm opposed to education. As the offspring of 2 teachers - I have to be. Secondly, the way I see, why do I want to spend money on educating kids who are just going to come up behind me and "take r jobbbs!" I'm not paying taxes for some runny nosed slacker to put me out on the street. No way! Third, all the kids are just going to grow up to be criminals anyway. Why put resources into providing them with a traditional education when they're not going to use those skills in their ultimate vocation? If they actually acquired those skills, they would either take our jobs or be literate criminals. Who need those? It's much more fun feeling morally superior because of the idiotic mistakes made by your local neighborhood thug. Additionally, it just doesn't make sense to waste money on schools, when the skills those kids are really going to need are all taught in prison. Their first trip to the big house will provide them with an apprenticeship and the life skills they need to succeed in the profession they will inevitably choose. Put the money where it can be put to good use - teaching the kids to be criminals. Last, education only drains resources from the economy. Think about the economic impact of crime for a moment. Without crime, our economy goes down the tubes even further than it already is. Without crime, we lose the economic impact of the prison system, police departments, fencing companies, weapons manufactures, security system companies (like MLS sponsor ADT), dog breeders and trainers, mall cops and other private security firms, locksmiths, baseball bat manufactures like Louisville Slugger and Adirondack would see sales slip, auto security systems (who could live in a world without someone's alarm going off to wake you up at 4am?), "the Club," pepper spray, those who make brass knuckles, chain and knives would all be up a creek, financial firms that accept deposits from criminal activities and launder the funds would be hurt. I could go on. Ultimately, if you look at it, our entire economic system is predicated on crime. Without crime, wealth wouldn't be created or distributed. By promoting edu-ma-ca-tion, you're taking out the underpinning of the American way of life. Is that really what you want to do? I think not. That is why I have to oppose and education board. (You gotta love half days at the office when no one is really up to doing anything!)
All I want to know is if school is still a place for learning something for the sake and love of learning? Or is it just preparation for taking a never ending series of tests, that provide nothing but a statistic for the administrators to gloat or fret over? It seems all this test taking has turned education into an exercise of making students jump through hoops. What a negative message that sends. Makes me glad I'm not a high school student today. Best damn bumper sticker I ever saw was one that said: "My child is more than a test score." Well, that's about as education-related as I'm gonna get today.
Do you have to be a teacher or a student to be interested in education? I would hope not. [mounting soapbox]There are too many folks out there who believe that once they get their piece of paper, whether it be a HS diploma or a college degree, that they are set for life and don't have to learn anything new anymore. Now I suppose that may be true for dishwashers or ditchdiggers, but for most worthwhile positions learning new stuff is part of the job description (or, at least, the employer's expectation). The alternative is stagnation. And since education is defined as "The knowledge or skill obtained or developed by a learning process." it would seem like education is /needs-to-be a life-long process. Thus, logically, if you are alive, you should be interested in education.[/mounting soapbox]
Please. That's crap. In any case, it's open. And several Fire fans need to get back to school ASAP. In any case, whether you're a student now or not, you have been one at one time or another. If you've had anything at all to do with education at all, you can add to discussions. Like I asked before... why did you like some teachers and not others? Do you think the SAT/ACT is valid? How'd you do, and how do you feel about it? Did you get a 12 on the ACT and you're now CEO of a major corporation? Did you get a 31 and you're currently a homeless person who posts on bigsoccer through an internet-ready cell phone? If you vote, how much of a part does education play?
Actually, this was discussed at length in another forum. The discussion was good. That's part of the reason we wanted the forum. It only partially belonged where it was.

It's crap? Your a teacher and this is the way you think? "People aren't completely interested in the same things I am so they are all crap!" You called for students and teachers. Maybe some of us aren't interested in coming to bigsoccer to talk about education. Doesn't mean we don't care about education. Perhaps some of us have three children and are heavily involved in our community with the PTA and youth sports and that's how we interact with regards to education. Perhaps there are 100 other situations. Doesn't mean that it's all "crap" and that nobody cares about education. It just means that people aren't interested in discussing it on BS. As a teacher I hope that you will teach your students to have open minds and realize that their point of view is not the only one that exists. Teach them to take a second to think about how others view a situation or the world around them. It will make them better people and perhaps they wont assume everybody else on earth is "crap". Anyway, glad you got your forum in spite of all of us who tried to spurn you by pretending we weren't interested.
For the record. I'm not fighting. I call it "passing the time". Just in case people take me too seriously.

I am not a teacher, nor do I play one on TV I had a brief, frustratuing foray as an adult ESL teacher at Evanston Township. Before that I had a more satisfying experience as a one-on-one volunteer literacy tutor. Easier to work with one adult, than a class-full of bored and/or confused adults who would later drop out. Oh well. For the record,I'm a library student. Even though I have one more semester to go, bet the house I'll still be going to continuing professional education seminars, classes, etc. As was previuosly mentioned, just because you've got the sheepskin, doesn't mean the learning stops.
my mom's a teacher, one person addicted to this board is enough. you should hear her go off on NCLB, it's incredible.
