does anyone know what brilliant leagues of footie that we will get to see next year on FSW? perhaps any changes? eredivisie or serie A would be absolutely ideal but i assume that the station is gearing towards a more North American feel.

    any thoughts are welcome~

    Confirmed so far:

English Premier League (contract ends May 2004)
German Bundesliga (contract ends May 2004)
    Argentina (contract ends June 2004)
    Brazil
UEFA Super Cup: AC Milan vs Porto, August 29
US Open Cup (contract ends December 2003)
    MLS ("partnership" through 2006)
MISL Indoor (time buy through April 2004)
A-League (time buy through October 2006)

    Gone:

La Liga (ESPN Deportes wants it, but may not get it due to the mess in Spain.)

Scottish Premier League (to air exclusively on closed-circuit TV at North American Celtic Supporters Clubs and North American Rangers Supporters Clubs. The clubs want exclusivity in order to protect membership sales. No more Scottish League via 48-hour delay on FOX Sports World.)

UEFA Cup Final (Setanta bought the rights)

    ===

Serie A will air on Gol TV (1st pick of Sunday afternoon game, plus live coverage of 1 Saturday game and 1 Sunday night game) and RAI Int'l (2nd pick of Sunday afternoon game, plus 2-hour delay coverage of a Saturday night or a Sunday night game).

    Dang.

Does that mean no UEFA Cup on FSW for the entire tournament.

    And thanks for the update.

Re: Re: Re: Next Season's Programming

    No.

Setanta bought the US/Canada TV rights to the UEFA Cup final and a whole bunch of UEFA Cup games from the French/German agency SportFive.

FOX Sports Int'l (FSI) will have to decide whether it wants to sublicense UEFA Cup games from Setanta, buy rights to UEFA Cup games controlled by another agency (i.e. Octagon CSI, ISPR/Infront, Media Pro, ISC), or skip the UEFA Cup entirely.

TV rights to UEFA Cup matches are sold by the marketing agency designated by the home team for each match. SportFive, being one of the biggest agencies, represents a majority of the clubs.

The only soccer TV product that FOX Sports World absolutely has to keep buying in order remain relevant is the English Premier League.

Getting US TV rights to EPL was the reason why FOX Sports World was launched in the first place.

Losing tape-delay access to Scottish Premier League games will hurt FOX Sports World a little, but not that much.

Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, Eredivisie, Ligue 1, etc. aren't essential for FOX Sports World to remain a viable business. MLS delivers a bigger audience than any of these leagues for a fraction of the cost.

Does the new Premier League TV deal spell new broadcast times for EPL games on FSW?
I thought the marquee matchup was Saturday, 12:30pm???

The marquee matchup has always been on Sundays at 1600 UK time on those weeks without UEFA Champions League matches. Those games air in the US via pay-per-view and in Canada on FOX Sports World Canada.

NewsCorp, on behalf of FSI, still has to buy US and Canadian TV rights to EPL for 2004-2007. I expect FSI to buy the rights unless someone out there is willing to pay on the order of 10 times what the product is worth.

There is virtually no chance Euro 2004 Final will air live on FOX Sports World.

I expect the European Championship to be on pay-per-view in the US market for the forseeable future, including 2004.

Don't know if FOX Sports World will spend the money to get Euro 2004 on 48-hour delay, as it did with Euro 2000.

From a business perspective, Euro 2004 would be nice to have for FOX Sports World, but is not really necessary for FOX Sports World to remain relevant as a business.

The only soccer product FOX Sports World needs to have in order to sustain itself is English Premier League.

To watch Euro 04 live without paying a premium, get a Canadian DBS. If it follows Euro 00's pattern, it will be on TSN and and its spillover sister station OLN Canada, at a cost of about CDN$20 per month.

In early 2000, da_cfo predicted on his website soccertv.com that Euro 00 would only be available on TSN of Canada in North America. That prompted me to get a grey market Bell ExpressVu system, solely for the purpose of watching the Euro. Of course, da_cfo didn't tell us that his prediction was wrong, as Setanta negotiated the contract later on, and made the Euro available on closed circuit in bars, and PPV on Directv, Dish and cable in the U.S. market.

Still, his "mis-prediction" save me some bucks. In the next few years, I saw a lot more European games at a cheaper price than what Directv, Dish and PPV charge in the U.S., as well as some games that are not even available in the U.S. market, like the Champions League games on TSN and RFO, so I have to give Oliver credit for that...

What will happen with Euro 2004 in Canada remains to be seen.

BCE/CTV, the new majority owner of TSN/WTSN/RDS/OLN Canada, takes many of its orders from ESPN, which owns 33% of TSN/WTSN/RDS/OLN Canada.

Euro 2004 is NOT ESPN International property.

The TSN Euro 2000 contract was done under the old regime at TSN, which was then controlled by the Labatt brewery.

The new regime at TSN/RDS, BCE/CTV, doesn't think like the old regime. The new regime will pay for Canadian sports and will air a ton of ESPN filler, but is not keen on paying for international sports not involving Canadians.

    Euro 2004 isn't exactly a must-have TV property for TSN/RDS.

A betting man would bet that Setanta will buy both US and Canadian TV rights to Euro 2004 this time and put every match on pay-per-view on both sides of the border, with possible 48-hour delayed coverage on FOX Sports World Canada (owned by Global TV, not FOX), and possibly on FOX Sports World US (only if FSI feels that MLS isn't adequate to carry FOX Sports World US through the summer).

Setanta is going to put it out as a full package($300 or so. Might be $240) as well as game by game, ppv. Shane O'Rourke told me that a month ago but these things do change.

ESPN has the rights to all the good La Liga games.

FSWorld only gets a leftover match.

The good EPL games are on pay-per-view.

Since you were in New York, you should have checked out Nevada Smith:

You can only blame yourself for not knowing where the good matches are...

I'm sure this is blindingly obvious, but how did Nevada Smith's get the Real match?

Do they have ESPN Deportes or was it on PPV?

Many bars and pubs have grey market satellite TV systems from Latin America or the Caribbean.

2 years ago, FSW had Eredivise (sp?) and the Fench league. I think they should try to get them back if possible. What about the Portuguese league. I also think they should drop La Liga. I would think most here want to see Real Madrid or Barcelona, but that ain't happenin. I enjoy watching European footy as well as from the Americas. I do however miss my sunday morning Eredivise game. Sundays feel so empty without it.

What about the FA Cup? Is that included with the Premier League?

Nope, international TV rights to the English FA Cup is sold by a different agency (Octagon CSI) and requires a separate contract from international TV rights to EPL.

Setanta has the US and Canadian TV rights to the FA Cup from 3rd Round through the Final for the 2003-2004 season.

Look for Setanta to sublicense live coverage of most midweek replays to FOX Sports World and FOX Sports World Canada (excluding big matchups such as Man U vs Arsenal), plus tape-delayed coverage of some weekend matches (delayed by 1 day to 7 days).

Sorry if this is not the most constructive post...

    but I hate Setanta!

Also, I saw it mentioned earlier that Setanta taking the UEFA Cup and exclusive rights to the Scottish League having something to do with the Old Firm clubs themselves. What is the relationship between the three entities (Celtic, Rangers, Setanta)? Whatever it is, I dont like it.

Beckham inflates La Liga fees for Sky

    http://football.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,9753,982472,00.html

No idea how this effects US FSW viewers, but it looks like the Beckham transfer is going to drive up the price paid by Sky for La Liga matches in England... by like FIVE times.

No idea either how this will effect the availability of Spanish matches in the US overall, either. But I'm sure a few folks will show up to speculate usefully.

Why? Remember 15-20 years ago when there was no Setanta? did you see all the FA Cup, Scottish league, UEFA Cup, European Championship Qualifying on ABC, CBS or NBC? or were they shown on ESPN or TNT?

I remember 1987, when the FA Cup Final was available in the U.S. It was on a channel called SCORE. You would have trouble locating that channel even with a C-band. I had to tell the sportsbar's bartender to point the dish to a particular satellite to catch the game.

Setanta owns the N.A. rights of Rangers and Celtic games and sells them to Rangers and Celtic supporter clubs. I am sure Rangers and Celtic fans have no problem with that arrangement because they have been watching their teams in pubs for a few years, as members of the clubs (of course require $$$ for memberships).

Setanta then sell the delayed rights to FSW. That's why you never see Motherwell vs Dundee or Aberdeen vs Kilmarnock on FSW, except in very rare occasions.

as for setanta when i watch euro qualifying its $20/game and how does setanta--get their money from the bars---how do they know how many people actually watched a certain game or they just charge a flat rate like $2000 a game
