I’d support Mamdani doing all those “tax the rich” things if he made exceptions for major funders of soccer in America. Like, that NYRB training facility is awesome, so he should give Red Bull corporation a tax break for its New York City headquarters. Same with any Home Depots in the city. Does Anschutz still own movie theaters? Lower their taxes. But not Wal Marts, not until Kroenke starts taking the Rapids seriously.

The article describes Mamdani as a Democratic socialist. That doesn’t make sense. Either he’s a Democratic Socialist, if he’s a member of that party, or he’s a democratic socialist, as in, an adherent to that political philosophy. Why someone would capitalize D but not s makes no sense to me.

I don't really want to get into politics.'
Just weird that our USMNT coach is being bankrolled by a guy like that (Regardless of party.)

Weird for a long-time fan like me.

It would be one thing if the USMNT coach's salary was being sponsored by Adidas or Nike or whatever.

But being bankrolled by a dude? I guess that's the state of the world in 2026. Its one thing for Arthur Blank, who owns a high profile MLS club, to help fund a USSF complex in Atlanta. He and his family have skins in the business of soccer in the country.

Griffin just seems like a big-time soccer fan who happens to be a billionaire hedge fund dude.
He's been funding grass roots soccer projects in Chicago and now Miami.

So maybe he would continue sponsoring the USMNT coach's salary. What's a couple million to him? We'll see. Or maybe it'll be somebody else. Maybe the USSF is building the capital right now for its next USMNT coach. Just get on the phone to Elon Musk (who reportedly is a soccer fan and has gone thru periods of wanting to invest).

There were weird stories about how this was a legitimate strategy of the USSF. To court billionaire dudes to sponsor things. I found this comment below by the CEO of US Soccer really bizarre. The USSF is a steward of capital?

How Billionaires and a Costly Red Card Are Reshaping U.S. Soccer

“We hope to prove to folks that we’re good stewards of capital—that by virtue of giving us money, you can see impact,” U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson said in an interview. “And if you look at our business over the last two years, we went from a business losing $40 million a year to one that will be quite profitable and is making record investment in things that years ago wouldn’t have seemed possible.”

Jesse Marsch is being bankrolled by the MLS ownership groups for Vancouver, TFC and Montreal.

For all of the "as long as it's not a MLS guy" talk........ Bruce Arena is still the winningest USMNT coach of all time......

Anywho, let's give Tab or Wynalda the gig and tell them to have at it seeing as they believe that only they know best.

    :) :)

Let's just turn the gig over to the podcasters who aren't hirable to do anything else (of which we seem to have an increasingly large community).

Tac, 3FOUR3, and 11Yanks should be at the top. Then we can have prospects run the youth teams.

Just take the college football approach to funding. Uniquely American in it's own way

    USSF boosters?

Its a concept. Not far from what they're doing without calling it that.

..........................but the USSF is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit umbrella organization in the eyes of the IRS. So its weird to be talking about profits and investments and capital. I get it. They can make a profit, but must re-invest that to further their mission. I just think the wording above by Batson is really weird.

    What is a 501?

501(c)(3) tax-exemptions apply to entities that are organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes, for testing for public safety, to foster national or international amateur sports competition, or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals.

I'm no accountant or anything. There's probably a benefit tax-wise for rich dudes to be donating millions to the USSF. Its like donating to a charity. They can deduct it from their federal income taxes or something. I'm not smart enough to know....................................

[Not that they pay taxes anyway. These dudes get rich knowing every loophole.]

So if you're the USSF, then lean into it......................

Go around to the rich dudes, let them know the deal in some shady back room over expensive bottles of whiskey, and raise 10 million for the next coach's salary. Of course, you have to do the same for the women's coach. Whatever.........................

If the World Cup is a flop maybe skip the billionaires and just hire Bob Lilley.

Still have no idea what happened to him. There was an "incident" that led to his departure from the Hounds that we never received any further information on. Rob Vincent took over mid season and won the Championship.

I’d assuming they’d probably let him live in Germany the same way Pochettino doesn’t seem to be based in Atlanta.

Those burned bridges with Marsch and USSF are mostly between him and Crocker who is now gone. I don’t think it’d be an impediment if USSF really wanted him. Now whether it’s a good idea is a different discussion. Though to the extent people complain about dual national recruiting and Pochettino he’d be all over that (which is an important skillset for the coach but not the only necessary one).

As for whether we can get a benefactor to fund the position I suspect that depends on who. If Pep or Klopp wanted to come for instance, I think it’d be very easy to find someone to write that check. But less so for a foreign coach who isn’t a big name.

I don’t think that necessarily an accurate assumption. There’s a whole lot of people at US Soccer who don’t like anyone speaking out against the org; Marsch may have focused his ire at Crocker, but that doesn’t mean a decent number of people didn’t have an issue with Marsch’s ongoing hissy fit.

We haven't yet had a former player be the coach. If I had to pick one former player that I would want to be the coach, it would be Thomas Dooley. Former captain, former national coach. What is he doing now?

Berhalter had 44 caps, played in 2 World Cups and though he never scored his shot was the one behind the infamous Torsten Frings handball. If we really get into the weeds of the dark ages too, Bob Gansler, Bruce Arena, Walter Chyzowych, Bob Kehoe, and Gordon Bradley all had caps and coaches as well

Dooely is coaching Guyana, seems Cherundolo or Bradley in a few years would be the more likely choices

Dooley brings a lot to the table, including being a dual national, a usmnt captain, and playing every minute in his two world cups for us. Just think about how he would have handled the Noah Banks situation.

He was an assistant for the US under Jurgen for a few years, since 2014 his managerial career has included the Philippines, clubs in Vietnam and Malaysia, and most recently Guyana. Nice story and he'd probably be a super interesting guy to have a few beers with but he isn't a serious candidate for a top 25 international managerial job, former player or not.

Why would he ever want to coach the USA? For him, that would be a major step down in terms of a coaching job.

Plus, the current players' quality has shown that no matter who is in charge, the coach won't make them better.

He definitely wants to coach a national team and Spain is off the table and both England and Brazil won’t be open post World Cup. On top of that the guy has always had a fascination with American. Just go read about his sabbatical between Barcelona and Bayern living in New York City. There’s already chatter after Man City he’s going to go live in New York for a bit.

None of that means he’d absolutely take the USMNT job, but it’d be foolish not to at least test the waters.

And yes I agree while a coach may make a difference on the margins, the limiting factor is always going to be the level of our playing pool. But that doesn’t mean I’d turn down the greatest coach of the modern era if he wanted to come.

It is noteworthy that Pep has essentially proclaimed that positional play is dead.

I guess, with full credit to Dr Dre, Pep will be in the lab with a pen and a pad trying to get the next system off.
