There's literally zero chance whatsoever Matarazzo would coach the USMNT now. He's literally never been valued more as a club coach in the European game. He had some success in Stuttgart before things went south, same with Hoffenheim, now he completely turned around Real Sociedad's season and won them a Copa Del Ray. Coaches are on short leashes, but his value in the game has never been higher after this performance and his entire career has been about building himself into a European club coach and he's in the process of reaching the pinnacle, winning his first major trophy. We might have a chance at him for the '34 or '38 cycle, but I see zero chance whatsoever he's here for this cycle, only exception I could see for that, is as a care taker hired if our first hire goes sideways and he gets sacked again in the next 18 months or so in Spain, and even that isn't what we want or envision. Those of us who want him, want him for a full cycle, and that's probably not remotely a possibility until '34 or '38 at the earliest.
Are we still obligated to make sure that somebody suggests Jose Mourinho every few pages? Trying to figure out how much sage I need to burn.
people dont recognize that managers change, though. after the usmnt, bob bradley went on to manage the egyptian nt, in the prem, ligue 1 and norway. that didnt make him a top tier manager but it did make him a substantially different (and better) manager. but to this day all people see is "empty bucket". arena otoh was easily the best american manager we had ever seen, caught lightning in a bottle and- in a mindset weve seen all too frequently with players- didnt think any offers he got to manager abroad were "worthy" of his genius. and while staying in mls his entire philosophy changed to 3 "stars" and 8 worker bees. in fairness to him thats enough in mls (and one of many reasons we cant use success in mls as a primary factor), but he was completely at sea when rehired- and everyone acts mystified he wasnt the returning conqueror. its one thing having zero nuance, understanding, lowest common denominator dumbassery on bs- just as it is annoying to have blind eurosnobbery- but thats been our fed as well; ever since bruce wasnt able to magically catch every break needed (between taking every bit of advantage we could) in 06.
i dont really agree with this. i think hes proven at multiple clubs that he can stabilize and get close to (any given team) the best out of them. thats what hes proven a few times over. and most importantly to the usmnt conversation is that he isnt married to any one style of play, which i think is the single most important quality to that position. where i disagree if his standing with sociedad. yes, the copa win is huge (and a huge boost to both his resume and standing with the club), but unlike the other teams hes managed real had been top 7 for a few years prior to last. they were in a freefall. and im not saying he should have (or could have) had them back in europa spots in the time he had but the expectations are different and he only raised them. i do agree hes not leaving that for the foreseeable future, but if theyre sitting around 10-12 at the midpoint of this season its very possible it wont be his choice. and the dumbest part is us fans (meaning bs and us soccer media) will say he isnt good enough.
And Pochettino will make a decision next week https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_...chettino-make-decision-usmnt-future-next-week
this is BS. Who’s making the decision to hire Poch? JT Batson? Gooch? We need a technical director first to hire and evaluate coaches, as Tab Ramos pointed out on his podcast.
I just don’t think he’s coming back if it’s taking him this long to decide. I guess we will see what happens.
The extension of his contract was offered to him a couple of weeks ago. It seems like he is still undecided. It could be a sign that maybe he is considering not coming back.
I would hope they at least promote Gooch. And if they don’t hire a sporting director a public discussion as to why and how sporting decisions will be made going forward.
I have to say I don’t understand the defensive loyalty to the corrupt douches at US Soccer. They’ve been buffoons of the highest order so I for one am not going to clutch any pearls that Marsch called them out for it
Telling that Poch and Eggg are essentially tied for the best record among coaches with more than, say, ten matches in charge.
How do you figure Türkiye and Bosnia wouldn’t have made playoffs in prior rounds? They finished second in their groups. That’s been the usual standard, no? (for the record, UEFA qualifying is the stupidest on earth, except maybe CAF)
