Who does everyone want after Poch? Some options: Cherundolo Matarazzo BJ Callaghan Brian Schmetzer Michael Bradley Pablo Mastroeni Mikey Varas Pat Noonan Greg Vanney Ben Olsen Gerardo Martino David Wagner Fabien Hurzeler Pep Guardiola Gareth Southgate Didier Deschamps Ronald Koeman Roberto Martinez Jesse Marsch (haha)
Its important to note that Poch's salary is being paid by donations right now. Will that continue post-WC 30? Probably not. I suspect we'll go back to a domestic option with a two year contract. Same salary as Emma Hayes. [By the way, I'd have this coach also with the If it works, great. If not, then we find another coach for 2030 WCQing. Doesn't have to be American. Oscar Pareja is available, for instance. Its important to note #2: In a recent interview, Mauricio Pochettino didn't rule out staying with the US job. So if we crush it at the World Cup, maybe that's a consideration.
Only if the contract is structured in such a way as to limit when he can resign without the Fed getting him or his club to cut us a massive check. If we crush it, AND said crushing doesn’t result in ManU or whatever signing him, every time there’s an opening at a big club, his name will come up.
Only problem is he refused to play Rokas Pukštas when coaching him in Croatia. And he's a terrible coach.
A lot will depend on how Poch does at the WC. I’m not convinced yet that pedigree is what matters for national team managers. Guys like Arena and Bradley outperformed the talent at their disposal because they were both incredibly well prepared and emotionally intense. Klinsmann had the latter but not the former: Gregg was a nerd with zero rizz. I honestly can’t tell with Poch yet. But the next guy has to be someone who is going to embrace the suck of qualifying and forge a team of warriors out of the experience. Not sure we have that right now.
These are always hard because the pool of foreign coaches is always gigantic and you have no idea who's actually interested. If we're looking at American, the pool of Matarazzo, Schmetzer, and Cherundolo is probably the best bet. I wouldn't hate BJ, though it might be too soon for him. Bradley definitely needs a few more years. I'll probably have a stronger opinion once we know who The USSF is actually talking to, I wouldn't have thought Poch was a serious candidate after The 2024 Copa America
Maybe, his serial one and dones are concerning, But outside of Pep, Deschamps and Southgate, who in that list up there hs Italy knock off Norway for the top of their group? Do any of them get OUR current team out of that group ahead of Norway? None of them magically keep Bastoni from the DOGSO red card. Personally I want Ancelotti or Klopp but I'm figuring we aren't gonna have "good UEFA coach" money 2 cycles in a row
Yeah, I feel like Pochettino has been a mixed bag so far, and we probably could have gotten similar results from a much cheaper domestic option. But like you say, that could change drastically based on the WC. Maybe the USMNT makes a run to, say, the quarterfinals, electrifies the country, and the money guys decide it's worth it to pay for another bigger name next cycle (and bigger names are interested). But I think the more likely outcome is that we do about like we always do and go out in the round of 32 or 16 with a mixed bag of performances, and the fed goes back to a cheaper domestic option for the next cycle.
Cherundolo just moved back to Germany. I doubt he would want to move his family BACK to the States. Schmetzer is fairly entrenched at Seattle. Surprised Jim Curtin wasn't mentioned. Pep is a pipe dream. Shocked Jose Mourinho wasn't mentioned. I'd love to see BJ Callahan get the reigns full time. The more crucial long term hire is going to be Sporting Director.
i would be happy with a four year offer to matarazzo, ok with 4y for hurzeler, or two year deals for dolo or callagan. ive long been vaguely interested in rafa benitez and christophe galtier. id only want curtain and/or schmetzer as assistants, and as a less-than-zero-percent chance marsh as the lead assistant for an mls "outsider". i do not believe an entirely non-american staff is a viable scenario for us. michael bradley is really interesting to me, but not until mid-cycle.
My wife was quite taken with Herve Renard. He’s a lethal combo of rugged masculine looks with European style. He’d look cool on the usa sideline, that much we know for sure…
Unfortunately, with our defense, I just don’t see a scenario where we make a run. I see us going back to a domestic coach after this… Not sure that is what we need, but I suspect that is what is going to happen.
