Yeah, I don't get the claim there'd be home huge outrage if England appointed a foreign manager. There'd be a few pieces in the obvious press outlets questioning whether or not it's the principled thing to do but largely if people thought the manager was good enough they wouldn't be too bothered where they were from, especially when you look at the success Weigman has had with the women.
The FA certainly felt there would be a major backlash in 2016 which is why they felt obliged to go with Alladyce when Southgate turned them down despite all the warning signs. Maybe it was just who I grew up with but I only remember Sven and Capello being unpopular and people constantly wishing it was an Englishman
In 2016 they were more grappling with a lack of options more than anything else, going back to my point about the barrier to foreign manager is more salary related than anything else. Club manager salaries have gone up massively, the FA were able to make Capello the best paid manager in the world at the time, now Southgate earns about as much as a mid-table premier league manager. Back in 2016 we reportedly interviewed Klinsmann, and Ashworth later revealed Rangnick was in contention, but unless you've got a big reputation as a foreign manager its going to be much more difficult. If you were were down to Klinsmann as a main option for foreign managers then Allardyce was legitimately probably a better choice. Neither Eriksson or Capello were more unpopular appointments than McClaren and Hodgson either side of them. Indeed they were both initially popular when they were doing well. Of course you will always get the odd person who's against it, or the odd article written about England should have an English manager, but you can't seriously think that there wouldn't be a much worse backlash if England were to employ Frank Lampard. The couple of articles about "England should have a England manager" would be massively dwarfed by the amount of coverage of the FA "wasting" this generation with a job for the boys appointment. I mean do you seriously believe if England were able to attract Guardiola, the media reaction would be worse than if they employed Steve Bruce?
Probably not much but a couple of newspapers would be skeptical of Guardiola simply because of the investigation into Man City and being involved in legal battles with them. Whosoever is picked is going to divide opinion through there is no one near a consensus candidate.
On social media lots are hoping Emma Hayes replaces Southgate. To me it feels like Cooper will get it unless Potter or Carsley remain unemployed/in their current Role till then.
I think Gareth Southgate has done a good job as England manager. He has reached a final, and another semi-final.
☑️ Dan Ashworth says he & Eddie Howe are fully committed to NUFC & won’t be tempted by any overtures from England or Man Utd 🗣️ “It’s the same situation as Eddie. I'm really happy, it's a brilliant city, club & project.”🟢 @MailSport story 👇https://t.co/SIdl08VwYF— Craig Hope (@CraigHope_DM) November 6, 2023
🏴 The FA will face competition to make Jose Mourinho their replacement for Gareth Southgate in the England hot seatSaudi club Al Ittihad have reportedly joined England in pursuing Roma boss Mourinho👀https://t.co/6HK0Yex6G6— TEAMtalk (@TEAMtalk) November 7, 2023 Surely there would not consider him anyway. I doubt the FA want a manager who has very publicly fallen out with some of the squad before and has a bad on pitch temperament.
Potential scenario buster right here. 🔥🏴 EXCLUSIVE 🏴🔥TEAMtalk can reveal that Frank Lampard is a leading contender to replace David Wagner as Norwich boss! 😲Here are his managerial stats from stints with Everton, Chelsea and Derby. 👇Would you be happy with this appointment, Norwich fans? #NCFC pic.twitter.com/3gcd7lMm0n— TEAMtalk (@TEAMtalk) November 7, 2023
Yes it would be surprising if we know that the likes of Eustace, Beale, Rowett and Warburton (all better and cheaper managers than Lampard) are still free.
Lioness coach Sarina Wiegman has said that it’s only a matter of time before a woman manages the England men’s football team. The FA has already said she will be on the shortlist to succeed Gareth Southgate when he leaves. So can a female manager lead the men’s team to success? pic.twitter.com/DjXaarkb52— Good Morning Britain (@GMB) November 8, 2023
Potter is probably the FA’s first choice still but will likely be employed elsewhere come next summer. Dalic has no chance. Hard to imagine an FA who has been worried about how popular going non English will be going for someone who has no experience of English football and who very few people would recognise by name.
Who do you think would be less popular amongst the fanbase: Dalic, the greatest manager in Croatia's history who's achieved things people previously thought were unthinkable with such a small nation, or Frank Lampard? Fwiw I don't think the FA would consider Dalic but if popularity is your rational for foreign coaches not being considered it makes no sense for you to also think Lampard is in with a shout of the role.
I think most people would probably prefer an English manager, but the idea that any foreign manager would be immediately unpopular is fantasy stuff.
I think the trick for England will be targeting someone who fits the team and set up at St George's Park rather than just trying to get a name/whichever English manager is available who finished highest in the table as has to often been the case with the appointments. Mourinho would be a very 00's era kind of attempt at an appointment, though I suspect for multiple reasons he wouldn't get it. McDermott seems to have done a good job so far, Carsley was of course an excellent appointment for the under 21's and Wiegman obviously for the Women's side. Hopefully he'd be allowed to get on with it and make an appointment based on what he views as best for the continued development of the National Team.
🏴 Gareth Southgate to STAY on as England manager after Euro 2024 | @johncrossmirrorhttps://t.co/q1U6EqniO5 pic.twitter.com/IcnP19KIz2— Mirror Football (@MirrorFootball) November 9, 2023 Still seems to want to go November 2024. Very clear the FA are just going to hope he doesn’t go because they don’t have anyone their want available .
Why is it clear? The FA may already have a new manager lined up for all we know, and Southgate just said in his press conference that he hasn't decided what he will do when his contract ends in December 2024. That 6 month 'cooling off' period after the Euros gives both parties plenty of time to find the right solution. Unless you know different?
Former Chelsea and Everton manager Frank Lampard has emerged as the leading candidate to take over at League One club Oxford United. (Portsmouth news) Well that would rule him out.
Lee Carsley sounding like someone interested in the top job by talking about English player numbers in the PL.
The BBC live feed is 3-1 in favour of Howe replacing Southgate before the Euros. When was the last time the biggest English candidate rejected the manager role as Howe is likely to do next summer.
