Becuase they think he might already be tired of club management and want to manage internationally. It’s a stretch of an argument. More notable is them saying Potter might not want the job either.
Exactly. But he will take up a NT post to cement his goat manager career. It's funny how Capello at 2008 was the highest paid coach in the world.
Today’s performance was likely good enough for the FA management to think that, unless Carsley directly tells them he doesn’t want the job and won’t be changing his mind, that after November they will be able to offer him the job full time and he will accept. I doubt they will do much looking at other candidates between now and November 14th/17th.
The FA need to get moving. No reason why they can't get the ball rolling now. It'd be completely flippant not to even start interviewing candidates this month. They can't just keep dragging the Carsley situation out when it's looking increasingly uncertain.
There's probably a bigger gap between Greece and Finland and there is between us and Greece - it means almost nothing to beat/play well against them.

I'm still on the path to that" That's that. So unless they think Pep is a very big runner, there's absolutely no reason they can't appoint Howe, Tuchel or Potter in the next month surely?
What trophies has Howe won? And Potter has only won the Swedish league. Sounds like he suggesting they hire Tuchel or Guardiola. They will probably say they need more time to interview people etc - maybe also hope Howe gets the sack from Newcastle during that time.
Lee Carsley asked about reports saying he doesn’t want permanent job:“People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I’m in the middle.” Says he hasn’t enjoyed last 2 days as he’s “not used to” losing with England teams— Dom Smith (@MrDomSmith) October 13, 2024
Carsley asked does he feel the job is too soon for him, given he's just said this job needs managers with a top profile:"Definitely not... it's one of the top jobs. It deserves the best managers in the world. You've got a real chance of winning."— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) October 13, 2024
It's more the fact that he's on record as saying he doesn't think he's worthy of the job. He's making it virtually impossible for his bosses to give it to him. The field is 3 or 4 people max. So why they can't give it to one of them over the next 4 weeks is anyone's guess.
Because they don’t really want to give it to Tuchel or Potter and Howe and Pep are probably unviable.

It's not him, it's the bloody FA. He's probably under instruction to be coy about things. It's their amateurish indecisiveness that's causing all of this.

If wonder if it’s more likely he would want to join a national team post 2026 World Cup and have the full four years build up including Euros/Copa.
Lee Carsley appears to rule himself out of the running for the permanent England job…but then says he didn’t and still refuses to provide public clarity on his future.https://t.co/Msh0VF1qZT— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) October 13, 2024 Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler Lee Carsley plunges England future into further doubt with bizarre press conference Confusion reigns as interim manager delivers conflicting messages as to whether he wants England job permanently following win in Finland Lee Carsley refused to provide clarity over his England future, despite claiming the permanent manager should be a “world-class coach who has won trophies” and admitting that is not yet him. England got back to winning ways by beating Finland in Helsinki, but Carsley placed further doubt over whether he wants the job permanently when his initial spell as interim head coach ends after the Nations League games in November. Telegraph Sport exclusively reported on Saturday that sources in and around the England set-up are convinced he does not want the permanent job, preferring to continue working on his craft at this stage of his coaching career. Carsley appeared to confirm that when he told ITV: “This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and I am still on the path to that.” But Carsley then claimed he had “definitely” not publicly ruled himself out of the running with his comments to ITV and said: “Like I say, it’s important that I do the best that I can. It’s a privilege to do this job. I feel well trusted, it’s a great job and, you know, whoever gets it will be fully deserving. “I tried to make it as clear as I could. My remit was for three camps. The point I was trying to make is it is one of the top jobs in the world. I’m not part of the process, but it deserves a top coach. The players we have available, we’ve got a real chance of winning. That was the point I was making. “This is a world-class job, one that is up there with the best jobs in football and whoever gets it is going to be of a high level. It’s a privilege to do this job. I’m really well trusted. That’s why it was so tough to lose the other night (against Greece).” Asked if he wants to be part of the FA’s process to appoint a full-time manager once his interim period ends, Carsley said: “I speak to [FA technical director] John McDermott every day, we spend a lot of time together. I definitely don’t think it’s something I should be involved with. “My role is quite clear. I have got two titles at the minute, interim senior manager and Under-21 head coach. I’m really lucky with the support that I get at the FA from all of the people that work above me. I’m very lucky with the bosses that I have got. I feel well supported and privileged to be in this position to be able to coach the senior team.” Carsley again refused to directly answer whether or not he wants the permanent job and, asked why he would not, replied: “I’m definitely reluctant (to publicly say either way) because in the past when I have done this caretaker or interim role, I have gone so far down the ‘I don’t want the job’, I’ve actually not done the job. “It was one of the things I spoke about when I was asked to take temporary charge, it’s important that I keep an open mind because in that case then I’m not being reckless with my decisions. “I’m thinking thoroughly about how the team should play, the squad I should pick which is a challenge. Squad selection is very difficult with the number of players you have to leave out and what we have available for us. I have another camp to do that now. “I can definitely understand why you would be frustrated by it (the lack of clarity). Definitely, I can understand that because clarity is what everyone’s looking for in this process. “My remit was really clear in terms of the three camps. I’m not someone that’s constantly saying to John [McDermott] ‘can I have an update? Can I have an update?’ “Because the job is difficult enough as it is currently, so, yeah, I’m quite comfortable in that respect. But, yeah, I can understand why you would be frustrated.”
The Sport back pages tomorrow have headlines that feel more like a politician heading towards an inevitable resignation not the England manager causing some confusion. The Sun’s Chief football writer argues for the FA to get rid of Carsley now. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/31055122/lee-carsley-england-manager-the-fa-greece/ The BBC round up of the camp is extremely negative as well https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c39lyp8e40go
It's also the press though. That comment about the job deserving a "world class coach" comes right on the heels of him saying that everyone wants him ruled in or ruled out but he's right in the middle. So of course they print articles saying that he's ruled himself out and then act baffled when he says that he hasn't done that. They're either morons or they're monkeying about.
The world class comments came first in the interview to ITV followed a bit later by the clarifying waffle in the press conference. There is being coy and there is falling into traps and making eveything sound farcial and it become the later this evening.
