The FA believe Gareth Southgate has made the England job more attractive than ever as they begin the process to appoint his successor https://t.co/rp0WAVcZvu— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) July 16, 2024 Carsley next in Line as interim manager. Potter and Pochetino both interested as well as Tuchel.
Carsley as interim would be great from the FA's point of view. They get basically a free trial run of one of their candidates.
FA would consider putting in an interim - Carsley - if Guardiola were possible, and he left City at end of next seasonSimilar approach was used for WiegmanA lot of complications, though, and Guardiola may not even decide until late in seasonhttps://t.co/YkOlm9b8B3— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) July 16, 2024 Guillem Balague on 5 Live seems pretty adamant Pep would be up for taking over next summer
There's a decent timespan before the next games it'd be pretty strange for England to need an interim manager. I mean, it seems very, very likely that the eventual manager will come from one of: Howe, Potter, Carsley, Tuchel, Pochettino. How long can it reasonably take with such an apparent known candidate pool already? And at rate it's not like the FA are noted for outside the box managerial choices so it would be difficult to imagine someone emerging from outside that list of names.
The difference with Wiegman is England only had friendlies line up in that time period because of auto qualifying for the home Euro's (and in the end it ended up being only 3 friendlies). England are in the rather difficult situation that the world cup qualifying could be very tough this time round, given it seems they will be second seeds meaning potentially drawing a Spain, Germany, France... And if England win their nations league group, 4 of those qualifiers will have been scheduled to have happened by next summer already.
I think it would be challenging for Carsley to be effective knowing he was likely to be replaced (But with the chance that if something happened to rule out Guardiola would get it full time)
Plus Weigman had signed and been announced months before they made that. Phil Neville was meant to stay until the Olympics but then walked out in January 2021 so Hege Rilse was brought in for the three friendlies and then got given the Olympics as well. For them to do the same they would have to formally sign and announce Guardiola. It would be unsustainable to just have him as interim without any real reason
One way it could work is if a future incoming manager had agreed for the interim manager to be part of their coaching team.

Carragher’s piece is awful. He says the FA have blundered by not having a natural successor at U21 level Southgate was a long standing servant but Carsley somehow is not? Carsley has been flitting around the England set up for ages and you could make a very good argument that he is the best coach we have ever had at youth level.
Im willing to bet that he’s not even watched an U21 game for a long time or had any interest in it. Sometimes I don’t know how these guys get paid for not doing their research at this level.
He probably watched the U21 finals. It is just really poor stuff. I genuinely believe everyone on here knows more than the press about England and the set up because we follow it constantly. There are a few journalists that are good and close to the U21’s but most stuff about the youth teams and system is pretty poor.
Carragher's definition of a natural successor appears to essentially be "ex-England international" I mean he calls Southgate a long standing servant, but they've both managed the under 21s for the same exact time. And in that time Carsley won the competition without conceding a goal, and Southgate went out in the group stage.
Hmmm. Excuse my childish here. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE OMFG WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
I constantly moaned about his style of play and questioned his ability to get the best out of players, still there goes the best damn England manager we ever had. https://t.co/AJAmpTP1Ht pic.twitter.com/erZ7iCVh8O— Eugene (@eugeneh84) July 16, 2024
Eddie Howe is due to give a press conference at the Newcastle training camp later this week. Will he take the opportunity to rule himself out of the job during that?
I actually think if the FA thought there was a chance they would go for him but I highly doubt Klopp would want it anyway, especially now, the timing seems wrong imo. He’s just left Liverpool after a long stint and by all accounts he’s taking a long break which you can understand. Plus I’ll bet he’s waiting for the Germany job.
I'm really looking forward to Klopp and Guardiola officially dropping out of this competition, because it's obvious that neither of them will be England manager. However, the press and the more naive fans keep spinning their names and it's already tiresome.
I actually think Guardiola as England manager has a decent chance of happening. There isn't really many other places to go after City.
