I hope those are accurate simply because a drawn out chaotic search for a manager doesn’t tend to work out a lot in football.
Gareth Southgate’s successor has to build on his work and be bolder, get the balance right, not bow to reputation and be proactive with decisions. Appoint Eddie Howe and No 2 Jason Tindall working with an #ENG great like Ashley Cole, already building a fine coaching reputation.— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) July 16, 2024 One of the biggest criticisms I saw Newcastle Fans making of Howe last year was that he was too loyal to some players.
To be fair to Howe, they've had huge injury and suspension issues in midfield. I'm sure if you asked him his ideal midfield it might be a lot different to the ones he's played.
Newcastle might not be too upset with Howe being a candidate neither, they've appointed Paul Mitchell as their Sporting Director, who is very close with the available Pochettino.
Eddie Howe is the outstanding candidate, for sure. The only drawback to him becoming the England boss is that it means we'll have one less manager at club level who consistently selects English players. Poch has gone, so there'll only be Sean Dyche and possibly Kieran McKenna left.
I think if Howe doesn’t want it we will know within a couple of days. It will be destabilising for him and Newcastle to be linked for weeks.
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is apparently in the frame to become England boss, having left Anfield in May 👀https://t.co/PgO6BYhYbq— FourFourTwo (@FourFourTwo) July 16, 2024 I would be surprised if this happens
The most intriguing candidate to me is Pochettino. I think of all the candidates, on a purely tactical basis he arguably suits our squad best. He's very adaptable OOP and he excels at empowering individual players, in particular attackers. That not only suits our squad but suits international football in general. I do share some concerns about having a non-English manager though. The way Southgate deeply understood the psychology of English players, English fans and the English system in general I think would be tough for a foreign manager to replicate. Poch has spent plenty of time in England so maybe he can, but I think it's just impossible to say as an outsider.
Based on Dietmar Hamann’s prediction. I just don’t see it because the FA would know it couldn’t work.
Would rather Carsley than Howe tbh. He really impressed me with the football he had the u21s playing last summer.
More so than Tuchel who only spent a year and a half in the PL at a club with not that many English players or staff.
Lee carsley isn't ready yet. We need someone who can step up now we can't afford to take a risk. This group of players are coming into their prime
I really hope that the FA can somehow entice Southgate back into the FA behind the scenes maybe working with McDermott in some capacity because he apparently did so much in regards to development, structure etc as this is an area he excels at and unless he gets back into Club management or another National set up, then the FA should move to get him involved still in some capacity.
Every hire is a risk and no one guarantees success. You could argue Carsley is less of risk then multiple of the candidates mentioned, as he literally knows half the squad from his U21 and City development squad days.
Mauricio Pochettino is interested in managing England, Thomas Tuchel not expecting to be contacted, Eddie Howe believed to be in the mix.https://t.co/A1RthAVtXB— Nizaar Kinsella (@NizaarKinsella) July 16, 2024 Mauricio Pochettino is privately understood to be interested in managing the England national team. The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager, 52, loves the spectacle of English football, living in London and working with high-level players from this country. He is also believed to not need a break from football after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent in May.
The only one of the real potential candidates that I would not want is Howe. Probably going to be him then. I don’t get the logic around Howe. Style is not really suited to tournaments. His cup record is pretty average as a manager to say the least. In the CL I thought he looked out of his depth. Tough group I guess for him but someone like Potter looked so much more suited to that environment (even at basket case Chelsea). I just don’t get it stylistically or what he’s actually done that points to being in any way translatable to England.
Considering Potter, Howe and Carsley were all unavailable in 2022 if Southgate had gone then it would have been Pochetino or Tuchel if the FA risked going non English or Dyche if they wouldn’t.
