I’m not sure they would do that as it would lead to the question as to why Carsley is not trusted enough to be hired permanently. The view for many would then be the FA are waiting for Klopp to have a longer break.
There is a general acceptance now that Gareth Southgate has taken England as far as he can, and that a finisher is required. But who? For the past two years, the obvious three potential successors debated on this timeline have been Eddie Howe and Graham Potter, if the FA goes…— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) July 16, 2024 Henry Winter seems to think the players might not react well to Potter. Having Graham Potter in charge would suggest more of the same too, bearing in mind his Brighton side notoriously struggled to score goals. We've had 12 years of seeing England managed by cautious, defence-first pragmatists now. Let's just try breaking the cycle with a coach who knows how to get the best out of an attack and doesn't simply leave them to sort it out for themselves.
I'd be in favour of Carsley, like how he sets up his midfield. I think there's a very strong chance he gets the gig.
To be honest, I think we can probably rule out the next tournament for any European team other than maybe Spain just because it’s going to favour a South American team due to the heat and humidity in the US, Mexico and Canada. The heat is apparently very intense!
So did his Chelsea side. But then his Brighton side didn’t have the talent of the attackers he would have for England - they made chances they just were nit able to take them due to poor finishing and the chances often requiring difficult skill. Also his substitutions at cheslea very rarely worked. He struggled dealing with the ego’s at Chelsea so would have to work on stopping Ego’s retuning to the England set up.
I'm give you another uninformed scenario as to why they would do that. Whoever they appoint they are going to get blow back. There's no universal support for any English candidate and if they look to a foreign coach they'll get criticized for not appointing a manager from this country. If they give Carsley the job "while they decide" and England do well in their Nations League group, regardless of the fact that that's what they should do anyway, it will build some momentum behind him and it wouldn't surprise me if you even get some of the players coming out in support of his appointment. It's all hypothetical guess work on my behalf but I don't think it's in the realms of fantasy.
Carsley wouldn't be an upgrade imo. We need someone who has experience. Pocettinho or tuchel would be more my choice. Obviously pep would be the dream appointed or klopp
I'm not convinced about Carsley myself, my previous posts are just what I think could happen. I would say though that de la Fuente wasn't a universally popular appointment in Spain, coming from a similar background, and they looked pretty good.
As Fireburn mentioned Potter's Brighton always did well in terms of xG which suggests quality coaching but player finishing letting them down. To mark him the same as Southgate as a manager is well wide of the mark. Look at his games against Liverpool in 2021 where Brighton took 4 points oer the two games. Brighton went toe to toe with Liverpool and played some great football, his Brighton team often did. Hard to see Southgate ever doing that. I think judging him on his stint at Chelsea is misleading. Fireburn displays quite a lazy appraisal of his time there by completely omitting the fact that Boehly had been on a mad spending spree and they had so many first team players that they all couldn't fit in the changing room! It was a crazy situation not seen before in the PL and obviously extemely hard to manage. If you look at his career so far he's nothing like Steve McLaren, one of Fireburn's comparisons. What he achieved in Sweden and with Brighton was highly impressive by building a career bottom up and massively overachieving. For me he's the standout English candidate.
Actually he took 1 point from the Liverpool side of 2021/2022. He beat them in 2020/2021 which was weaker Liverpool side. I’ve seen Potter summed up as the Manager who wins matches you don’t expect but loses games you expect to win because if it’s not working it’s not working that match, And also I’ve seen it said that the reason for lack of goals was also that those XG’s were often very difficult chances. The pressure at Chelsea got to him a lot. Lots of snapping at the media. Could do the same for England.
It won't be so much a case of them not deciding, it will be a case of the Nations League games start relatively shortly and the appointment process takes time. Carsley then has the opportunity to showcase himself.
The likes of Mark Goldbridge celebrating when there is a good chance they will be just as unhappy with his successor.
What has the FA said on record to this effect? Anyone who pays any attention to this cretin is almost as stupid as the man himself
After 102 games and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is to leave his role as manager of the #ThreeLions.— England (@England) July 16, 2024 I can see him back in 2028 or 2030. As I have said it’s Potter we not making 2026 and I have even put a bet on that.
That doesn't answer my question, but I'm sure your well aware of that Hopefully not to much, your track record with predictions is pretty awful!
