The FA don't know what to do.

It comes back to no english coaches coming through and they clearly are not doing enough to help that either.

I wonder what they can do. Lower the cost maybe? But presumably that Money is used for something. .

I hope they do. But i think it would require Howe and Potter to be reject an offer first.

True but it’s notable all the sources that had near identical articles through the tournament have ahd the same articles today - as if they have had a briefing from someone.

The names are literally the same as the ones posted in the first post, the thread is literally someone posting articles and tweets with the same names, and flip flopping between who they think might be favourite for the last 18 months.

Tuchel would almost have to be a tournament only appointment.

Let someone do the qualifying part and then bring him in

He would have to treat qualifying as constant knockouts.

But any of them could be. International football is full of managerial disasters from good managers. Managers who have won Leagues and cups suddenly having camps that are reported to be divided and dysfunctional (Flick, Spaletti)

    More news at 10.

It’s a nothing story. I’d like the FA to be brave and speak to Klopp first.

If he says no, in reality, not much changes and the process still stays the same. Klopps half English now, laugh at that or not, would he like the job?

It’s a fair point to ask.

The issue with asking someone who will decline first is it makes the rest look further and further like the FA didn’t really want them. McClaren suffered from that.

There are just too many other obstacles as well with Klopp that the FA know would be a non starter

I’m not sure who the next manager will be or should be tbh but I would just welcome one who isn’t automatically scared of the opposition and their first thought is to nullify our opponents rather than let them worry about us. I think this is something Southgate really struggled with and you just always sensed it when he did press conferences and interviews.

The more I think about it, the more I think he'll stay - I don't think the FA have many options with regards to replacements as not sure there are any particularly knockout candidates out there so they'll just want to push the decision down the road.

With big clubs now only really doing managerial business in the summer, the timeline is never going to work itself out properly for them to find a proper replacement so they need to be going into a proper open recruitment window or leaving a vacancy open for longer.

Howe's situation at Newcastle is the one that makes you sit up and take note, because with the people that brought him in gone, it may be a good time to make that move - but for me if I couldn't get Howe I would leave Southgate in post.

Potter seemed to struggle so much with the extra media glare and spotlight, and managing big name players, at Chelsea - that is turned up to 1000 when the England manager

My uninformed prediction - Southgate steps down. The FA appoint Carsley as a caretaker for the Nations League matches. England win their group. Carsley appointed permanently.

I hope so I really think he could do a good job and set up England as we want to see them play.

I also think it's a bit embarrassing to be appointing foreign managers. We are not a developing nation. We should win or lose with our own. If we can't get it done so be it.

But there is more in the world than Howe and Potter.
Southgate staying is the worst possible solution.

Yeah, this is how I read it... and if things don't click with Carsley, then it would be no surprise if we're able to turn to an unemployed Eddie Howe later in the year.

One English coach who isn't being mentioned, and maybe should, is Gary O'Neil. He's a modern day manager; young, progressive, tactically astute and very nearly 'Manager of the Year' for the last few seasons at two different clubs. It's possibly come too early for him, but considering the paucity of English options right now, his name certainly deserves to be in the mix.

I'd rather us fall flat on our face with someone like Carsley than come up short with Southgate again because at least in that case we'll have tried to better ourselves.

By keeping Southgate we're wasting a cycle. We're always gonna come up short with him and by keeping him on we're accepting another tournament where we won't be good enough to go all the way. That's an acceptance of a substandard.
