The Sun giving us Lampard as an option. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/2916...th-southgate-england-lampard-klopp-guardiola/
He just does. The end of his time at Chelsea looked like the McLaren in the headlights we saw in 2007.
Who should be the next England manager if Southgate leaves?▫️ Graham Potter▫️ Mauricio Pochettino▫️ Eddie Howe▫️ Lee Carsley▫️ Eddie Howe@MalikOuzia assesses the candidates. https://t.co/pAEWIkgcMn— Standard Sport (@standardsport) July 15, 2024 Lot of people will be disappointed if it’s Potter or Carsley I suspect.
No logic or reason to this opinion then. As usual just a ‘feeling’. He’s pretty much the complete opposite of McClaren as a coach too.
Just based on remembering him on the touchline looking lost for Answers just before he got the Chelsea axe and that reminding me of McClaren ar the end,
Also I’m suoriseed none of the papers are suggesting Thomas Tuchel. We have been told he would take the job and he is a proven winner.
It is a very weak comparison for numerous reasons. Going to have to avoid the nonsense put in this thread for my own sanity.
He seems to want it going by his constant rejecting of other jobs. But of course they might be another reason.
You can’t know this though, it might just be that those jobs didn’t suit what Potter currently wants. I don’t think there’s any clear indication that he’s specifically holding out for the England job other than speculation unless he’s said so.
I think he would probably have to turn down the England job for the FA to go for a foreigner considering the amount of Ex players in particular as well as journalists who do not want a foreigner. Him and Howe can’t really be bypassed. Other than those two the FA could possibly justify not going for Carsley or anyone else homegrown.
It took from 28th June to 22nd July for Alladyce to replace Hodgson. A similar timeline would put any Southgate successor being appointed around the 10th August or later. Any delays or complications and it won’t be much preparation time before the 29th August and the next squad. If he is going he needs to announce it as quickly as possible.
The time feels right for Gareth Southgate to leave the England job - but the FA would face a two-man dilemma ⚖️✍️ @johncrossmirrorhttps://t.co/RIuiNCJQiT pic.twitter.com/Lkc0dXjy4f— Mirror Football (@MirrorFootball) July 15, 2024
Eddie Howe on FA shortlist if Gareth Southgate quits Englandhttps://t.co/rdpxVkmLej— Matt Lawton (@Lawton_Times) July 15, 2024 I just don’t see him leaving Newcastle. Plus even if he does his biggest flaw Newcastle fans have with him is loyalty. Interesting they say through the changes last week at Newcastle make it more likely.
England will not be short of interested candidates to succeed Gareth Southgate - Eddie Howe and Graham Potter high among them.https://t.co/LoG7jac5t7— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) July 15, 2024 BREAKING: Howe will be among the leading candidates to replace Southgate, together with Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley. (@ThatsFootballTV) July 15, 2024 ‘Howe will be among the leading candidates to replace Southgate, together with Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and England Under-21 manager Lee Carsley.’ ‘Former England internationals Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard could also enter the frame, but would be considered outsiders at this stage.‘ ‘The biggest hurdle facing the FA in terms of Howe is that they would have to convince him to give up his job at Newcastle and take a significant wage cut. Southgate is believed to earn around £5 million-a-year, which is at the lower scale for a manager at a top Premier League club and Howe would almost certainly have to take a pay cut to succeed him. Potter has been out of work for over a year since being sacked by Chelsea and would represent an attractive option for the FA, given his experience of having coached abroad. It is thought that Potter would be interested in the England job, having rejected Ajax earlier this summer and not jumped at the possibility of returning to Brighton, who appointed Fabian Hürzeler.’ Speaking ahead of the tournament, Bullingham did not rule out appointing a foreign manager for the England men’s team, pointing out that the women’s team are coached by Sarina Wiegman, who is from the Netherlands. That opens up the possibility of Pochettino and Tuchel being seriously considered to succeed Southgate. The pair would both be interested in the post and already have extensive links to the squad. Pochettino has managed a number of players during his time in charge of Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, while Tuchel worked with England internationals at Chelsea and helped Harry Kane enjoy his best goal-scoring season at Bayern Munich. Carsley is admired within the FA and guided the Under-21s to European Championship success, beating Spain in the final, last summer. He has also worked with a number of England’s senior players who have come through the age groups. Lampard and Gerrard would be considered outsiders, but their experience of playing for England and coaching at different levels could mean they are spoken to as part of any process.
Anyway after the jibes McClaren got for being second choice I’m suprsied the FA want Howe to be seen as the front runner and if he then turns them down Potter, Carsley or Pochentino to be seen as second choice. But it’s constant now that Howe is written as the front runner without any real pushback. The Football Association to conduct full process in their search for a new manager should Gareth Southgate walk away, with Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Lee Carsley and Mauricio Pochettino among the early contenders. https://t.co/v09KMMR3pr— Sami Mokbel (@SamiMokbel81_DM) July 15, 2024
I don't really see how Howe is plausible. Even if he wanted the job he has a contract running to 2027 on 6m. The level of compensation would be far beyond the FA. I also have my doubts over how suitable he is, I don't think he really sets up his midfields in a way that is conducive to international football. I don't know how much joy he'd get with his high pressing style with an England team at the end of long seasons either. Graham Potter seems more ideal, he's a uniquely "foreign" coach among English options in how he implements passing and pressing structures. I do have some concerns about him, particularly how his sides always seem to struggle goal scoring despite positive xG stats, but he strikes me as basically being the manager Southgate wants to be.
The Times say a source says a deal could be done with Newcastle and go on about the changes at Newcastle last week being a positive. Potter’s teams always have taken a lot of time to get going. International managers don’t get that time and a few qualifying mis ups can be costly and the 2026 qualifying could be on paper our toughest since the 2002 World Dup qualifying. I’ve seen it being described as Potter can win the matches you don’t expect but lose the matches you do expect to win.
Eddie Howe has always said previously, publicly and privately, that the England job is not for him at this stage. However, I would imagine, given all the turmoil at Newcastle this summer that he will need reassuring by the club that the project remains the one he signed up for.…— Luke Edwards (@LukeEdwardsTele) July 15, 2024
In one sentence the Telegraph say the FA want a manager with good man management skills and will keep a good camp then then a few lines later they suggesting Tuchel who has a history of dressing room feuds and even say the FA might have hired him post Qatar in particular.
