If we win on Sunday and he stays on so be it, I can accept that. But if we lose on Sunday and he stays I think that's broadly a really bad outcome. I don't want to sound ungrateful because Southgate has clearly done a lot for us, but after 8 years I think the time is right to move on. As well as he's done in many ways, I still don't think he's extracting maximum value from the squad and that's what we should be striving for imo. We might not find that, a managerial change guarantees us nothing, but that's what we should strive for, not basic stability.
Southgate set to be offered a new contract. Hope it’s after 4 years. If he wins, regardless of my happiness with the style, the man’s a hero.
It sounds like the FA seem concerned about who they might have to hire to replace them. Howe seems front runner but then they seem to be skeptical of Potter now a days and after that is the whole debate about going Foreign again.
It's partly because they don't like having to take a risk unless they have to imo, but I think it's a bit deeper than just football. I think there's also some truth to the claim some people make about the FA wanting a candidate who fits their image: a statesman, a good chap etc etc. The FA were grooming Southgate for this job from very early on; I specifically remember the headline "FA still considering Southgate for top job" after he got grouped with the U21s at the Euros. Why were they so desperate to draft a coach with a legitimately poor pedigree in to take charge of the senior national team? I find it hard to believe they just thought he was a top coaching prodigy because all the evidence suggested otherwise.
I think that has always been the FA’s nature. More so than some football federations abroad. Bacik in that era there were hardly any English candidates who they didn’t see as the complete opposite of what they wanted. I mean they turned down Harry Redknapp despite public demand to go for Roy Hodgson and omly went for Sam Alladyce through very gritted teeth (I suspect if they did think it was viable they might well have gone foreign that year.) And further back Brian Clough was always turned down.
They weren’t grooming him for the senior role in any serious sense. There was probably more of a ‘grooming process’ with Stuart Pearce but it was never going to work with him. Southgate came into the set up to help Trevor Brooking implement the new ideas (England DNA philosophy) created from the big review into English football. Helping get St George’s working etc. Then he eventually got the U21 role and did pretty well. Team played some good stuff in qualifying and beat some good teams in friendlies. The only reason he got the senior job was because of the lack of options, timing and agreeing to help the FA out in a challenging situation. There wasn’t a clamour to get him in the role when it came up. The FA didn’t expect the Hodgson reign to fall like it did (God knows why because every tournament with him was dreadful). So, they scrambled, begged Southgate to help and got fortunate.
I think Southgate walks regardless of what happens in the final. He was always going to be offered another contract unless this tournament was a disaster. The FA will want it to look like they offered him something before moving onto the viable options.
The FA wanted him as soon as Hodgson went but he turned them down so they went reluctantly to Alladyce. Had he said yes then he would have got it.
There must be a chance he says he will do the Nations League then leave but that would mean hiring mid season where the options could be slim.
Redknapp had so many skeletons in the closet he'd probably have had less time in the job than Allardyce managed.
This job must now seem very attractive to any top coach. I still think klopp would take it if offered
If Southgate did go it will be either Howe (If he will leave Newcastle), Potter, Carsley, Pochettino or Tuchel I suspect. Potter’s chances seem to depend entirely on if the FA think going for Pochettino is not such a good option it seems. 🚨🏴 FA insist on Gareth Southgate to stay, they want him to be England's manager regardless of the outcome in the Euros final vs Spain.Internal talks already took place to confirm total confidence in Southgate. pic.twitter.com/71ihPQX8Jw— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 12, 2024

I am worried if he does tell the FA he is going now and won’t even do the nations league that they not prepared - they seem to want Howe despite that not looking likely - I can definitely see that some in the FA just assume he would immediately take the job if offered because it’s such a big job and easier and more secure than a club job.
Lampard is not even in contention. You are the only person that brings up his name as a serious candidate.
It's not exactly new information that the fa want Southgate to stay, they've wanted him to sign a new contract for a long time. It's Southgate who's been holding it up. McDermott seems a pretty diligent and competent character, I'm sure he has reasonable plans of succession. With the euros finals being contested by former under 21 managers, and the most successful international coach, scaloni, also being an internal hire, I think carsley will have a very, very good chance if it does open up this summer. There's something to be said for the continuity and the success of it here and elsewhere will give.confidence. Plus he's actually been successful for the under 21s.
