Though the youth teams were under McBride's set of responsibilities. They are for the GM on the women's side, but on the men's side they have been very clearly in the job description of the sporting director.
I don't think any coach is hired or they have any agreement with anyone and whoever the new sporting director is, they are going to want have some influence in picking that coach.
Notable: Cindy Parlow Cone confirmed that, although officially it'll be the sporting director's choice, she will have a hand in picking the next USMNT coach pic.twitter.com/Ytycr8ECTy— Henry Bushnell (@HenryBushnell) January 26, 2023
Would that take not actually be "beginning" rather than "end" of summer. I think all the European leagues are over by the start of summer not the end. I guess they could want to wait for the coach's contracts with their existing clubs to be over, there may be some that automatically extend to the start of the next season or the might be "options" that preclude negotiations until the new season is starting but I think clubs and coaches would not agree to that kind of contract and there are legal bodies that might well consider such contracts anti-competitive. I never have liked secrecy. Even way back when I was in the service I did not like the secrecy, particularly after I found out the many/most classified items have been classified to prevent the USA public from finding out. Our enemies knew most everything that was "classified." It is the same with USA soccer. It seems that they are trying to prevent fans in the USA from knowing what is going on and they seem quite successful at that.
So you think the outside firm should just make the decision unilaterally without actually consulting people within the organization it's working for? Interesting approach, I must admit.
So the new sporting director and Parlow Cone… if these two people who played no part in the hiring of Gregg came to the conclusion that Gregg was the best candidate for the new cycle, that would be quite the coincidence!! This part of the press release more or less says Gregg is out, doesn't it?"Once the Sporting Director is hired, that individual will oversee the process of hiring the new USMNT head coach"— Marcus Chai (@chai_asc) January 26, 2023 (Unless the new sporting director is Jay Berhalter)
ok sure, lets pretend us soccer/mls isnt a tangled mess of one-time assistants, teammates, coaches, etc who wouldnt make up a challenging game of 4 degrees of bruce area... soccer is soccer. i kinda doubt this firm is going to say some ugandan club manager is the right fit, and ultimately cone (and/or the new sd if we fill that position first) will make the final call. unless youre talking about the sd (not that id have a different reply)? in that case id say a month ago the vast majority of this board would be pretty open to the idea of claudio reyna replacing earnie. so be as smug as you want- theyre going to talk to whoever they talk to and work within the parameters they are given. but we dont need outside help to recommend the choice between carlos bocanegra and peter vermes, or curtain and cherundolo. we need to get some new damn ideas if we are ever going to get better.
I don't think it's likely we will get a foreign sporting director. Partly because I don't think any non-American candidates will have any interest. I do think a foreign coach is a very real possibility. But this firm we are using works internationally in soccer. They have a mixed track record and may suggest someone who ends up bad, but I don't think they are who you go to when you are trying to ensure a domestic candidate.
This is not ideal. https://theathletic.com/4128014/2023/01/26/earnie-stewart-brian-mcbride-us-soccer-changes-explained/
I wish Mikey Varas was named interim manager instead of Hudson. I liked what I saw of Mikey’s youth team.
So am I on one hand, but on another U-20 WC is more important and interesting than anything MNT will be involved till July.
If I'm Cindy, I'm picking up the phone and calling Matarazzo and seeing how they might help each other. Matarazzo will not have any great options til the summer. In the meantime, USSoccer needs some guidance with March window, evaluation of young candidates/old pros, coaching search, etc.
I think they want to let him manage the U20 World Cup. Which will be a good test of his coaching ability. I think the issue is you don’t want to hire an interim coach who has a realistic shot at the job. That gives that person a huge leg up and means you may not end up running a real search at all. A new sporting director is also going to want to feel ownership of the process and the hire. I think Matarazzo should absolutely be a candidate, I just don’t think he should serve as the interim. And there’s not really another role for him otherwise.
My suggestion is totally based on Matarazzo not having any good prospects in the next 4 months and USSF likewise and Matarazzo having a unique background in the sense that he has managed in Germany, has a relationship with "enfant terrible" Nagelsman, has a degree in Math from Columbia, comes from the soccer mafia in NJ from an Italian background in soccer..........we're all Americans here, can we please help each other????????
To get all the good candidates interested, move soccer house to Florida. Europeans seem to love Florida for some reason.
It's because they're still showing re-runs of Miami Vice. And because they aren't familiar with the whole "Florida man" thing.
The Under-20 World Cup ends on June 11. Is that enough time for Mikey Varas to take over from Hudson as interim USMNT coach for the Gold Cup? I'd guess that it is.
I think the thing is, we aren’t going to have an interim sporting director or anything. So that really leaves just interim coach and I feel like if you appoint him that you’re probably just giving him the coaching job. And he very well might end up being the right choice, but that’ll mean we don’t do much of a search (and the new sporting director will have little involvement in the pick).
This really sucks, but I hope Cone uses the time to get good input and make excellent choices. I hope Hudson manages like he has a shot and we see some good stuff Saturday.
The Athletic article has very big claim. Earnie Stewart has been planning to move to Holland for a while now. This is confirmed by Earnie landing the PSV spot. That is not a club that simply names anybody. This also jibes with the McBride announcement that he decided to leave the position in October and the multiple claims from before ReynaGate that Berhalter did not plan to resign. If Berhalter is still a candidate it is likely only to show that he is still in the Federation's good graces (something I have claimed from the start). To me, what is really important here is that the Federation has not been in emergency mode. There is a plan and it is going to take some time.
Soccer house is moving, or rather, we will likely be seeing a National Training Center in preparation for 2026. https://ussoccerplayers.com/2022/01...-to-the-national-training-center-concept.html I'm thinking that whoever is named will get a hand in determining the final spot. At the moment my guess is that there is no current requirement to be in Chicago but that the candidate will have to agree to move to wherever the NTC is located later on. Florida could be a good place but it is probably not central enough for the 2026 tournament. My money is on Texas or Georgia. Georgia would probably be better long term given it is closer to Europe and an easier transition for European based players. Texas would be ideal for the WC.
