Sounds reasonable to me. Certainly the league is different than when Moyes took Everton from a bottom 3rd squad to a consistent just outside the top 3rd squad over the 10+ years he had them. Everton again is a bottom 3rd EPL squad.
And where did they typically finish under Moyes? He consistently finished higher than that. Ancelotti also came to Everton at a time they were spending like crazy (far beyond their means it turns out and part of why they’ve fallen off so hard).
They’ve fallen so hard since he’s left because they’ve had to seriously restrict their spending and sell off a number of their good players. The club is basically broke and it’s not crazy they could be put into administration if they can’t find a buyer. The Everton of the last three years is not comparable to when Moyes was in charge or during Ancelotti’a time.
Relevant to the Pochettino discussion. ESPN ranked the top 50 elite managers right now in men's club football in Europe 👀2. Carlo Ancelotti4. Mikel Arteta6. Luis Enrique9. Mauricio Pochettino@karlsentk ranked them all on @ESPNPlus 🔗https://t.co/gCbgklFenO— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 12, 2024 And this list isn’t exactly how I’d rank things either.
Hi guys, the way this coaching search is going I have decided to start accumulating Gregg Berhalter stock as it is obvious nobody wants this job other than him and Dolo. Let's give it a 3rd go around with the same tactics, same players and same coach! Go USA!
Crocker has super-secret knowledge that Americans don't have. He will choose the best choice and none of us will understand why that is, even after we lose in the first elimination round. But thankfully there will be people here who will try, futilely, to explain it to us. But will we listen? No.
[ Pochettino is a good coach which makes me wonder why he gets dismissed. With the USMNT I'd worry that Pochettino will just put a badge team together because it keeps his prospects in Europe intact. When he goes out he'll say his players weren't good enough, thanks for the cash.
Other than the precious few, they all get dismissed though. Getting fired is part of the deal. Poch would be an incredible signing for the USMNT. I have no idea how the results on the field would go, but it would be a really high profile signing by the USSF with the home world cup approaching. Tuchel is a good coach. Bielsa is a good coach. Don't seem to stay in jobs very long. Unlike those two, I've never heard any issue about Pochettino being a headcase. Unai Emery. Fired by Spartak Moscow. Left Sevilla amicably with time left on his deal. Fired by PSG. Fired by Arsenal. The list goes on. Now he's doing well at Villa. If their season doesn't go as planned................watch the hatchets appear. Just the way it goes. One of the Chelsea co-owners wasn't happy, so there you go. Mauricio Pochettino leaves Chelsea after 1 season in charge - ESPN Sources told ESPN that there has been a split for some time within the Chelsea hierarchy over whether to persist with Pochettino after a disappointing campaign in which they were languishing in midtable despite spending £1 billion ($1.27 billion) on new players since the Boehly-Clearlake Capital takeover of May 2022. Sources told ESPN that Boehly was keen on retaining Pochettino but Eghbali wanted to replace him with a new coach.
This was a fun thread until people started questioning whether Pochettino is good enough for the USMNT job. I can’t take it seriously anymore.
Admittedly, there are a few questions about how Pochettino would transition to international management. But I’m definitely on board with seeing how those questions would be answered.
Do we want Southgate? How would Cherundolo transition to international management? Related questions…Are we Brazil? Are we Real Madrid?
My comment was very much tongue in cheek-I’d absolutely take Pochettino in a half-second. There would be questions of any incoming USMNT coach-including Klopp or Pep. Whether it’s transitioning to the international game, dealing with a less-talented team, adjusting preferred tactics, EVERY coach would have questions.
"Mauricio, que los americanos quieren que les manejes el equipo, que te pagan bien." "Dejame en paz Karina, que quiero descansar." "Pero te la pasas mirando tele y durmiendo siestas, te aburres..." "I like London, good vibes. I'll just wait for the call. Besides, the Yanks won't let me take el pibe with me." "Seba ya tiene 30 Gordo, he's no pibe, you can't be taking him around as your assistant forever!" "Y Mau? We'd be far from him over there, he has a career in Spain." "That's a pastime not a career. He barely plays in the third division." "Lo voy a pensar, estamos?" "Don't think about it too long. They're going to find someone before Navidad, Gordo." "I'm sure I'll get the call before that. And we stay in London."
My growing fear is that Crocker feels pressure to placate the moron fans and make himself look good by hiring a mediocre foreign coach and passes on Cherundolo.
Which mediocre foreign coach would be an example of a mistaken hire passing over Cherundolo, in your opinion?
That would not be Pochettino however. And if we’re looking domestically we should probably start with Nancy.
McBride makes some very insightful points regarding the relationship between NT coaches, the players, and their club coaches. It's easy to see how these relationships can become counterproductive. Too many cooks in the kitchen with a young, developing, and impressionable team may not have a recipe for success. starts at 14:56
I agree on both. I said from the beginning that I’d be fine with Cherundolo or Nancy and that hasn’t changed. Pochettino would be a really good hire, but I’m not going to give it much thought until he’s officially announced as the hire. My concern stems from how long the process is taking, and how Crocker seems to be so focused on hiring someone who currently resides in Europe.
I think it just takes time. Look at England who lost Southgate not that much after we hired Berhalter and who still doesn’t have a permanent coach. My expectation is they’ll hire someone sometime this month even if not in time for them to take charge in September. If it’s Pochettino that’s great, if someone else I’ll judge that once they’re announced. And also if you look at the USWNT coach search he conducted, Hayes name kind of came out of nowhere late in the process after there was a top three of candidates the media was reporting.
