This implies Hoffenheim were interested in Sandro Wagner as a coach

So part of his interest may have been the club being in flux and maybe trying to replace him. But that hire fell through and the players strongly backed him. So that changed the dynamic at Hoffenheim.

I am very much not in the know about this, but is that right that Varas is coaching the U-20s at the WC? Why didn't he coach them in qualifying if that's the case?

Also, is Mitrovic still under contract? I figured his contract would be up after the Olympics, but Varas would still be under contract as part of the senior team staff.

Yeah, that Sandro Wagner story was the first thing I thought of in supporting @Pegasus 's theory. By US sports standards it's considered highly irregular to publicly or officially move to replace a coach until they resign or are terminated. But with different cultural norms, I can imagine Hoffenheim leaking the news that they are looking for a replacement to pressure Rino.

I have also not heard anything about Varas as U20 coach other that people were not happy about the coaching during qualifying.

It’s starting to get a little hard to take Tyler seriously. He pretends he’s being candid in these interviews but really he’s just saying what everyone wants to hear. If Gregg was back in the job tomorrow he would say how great it is that he has a uncle buddy as a coach.

I disagree because he was likely the guy that closed the door on Jessie.

im closer to saying hes full of shit. hes always been greggs biggest defender, and a manager who put everyone in their place would have had his injured ass on the bench a lot more than it was under gregg and maybe he wouldnt be going on two calendar years of being an inactive club player.

What if Cherundolo also says "no, thanks but no"?

I think there’s nothing contradictory about appreciating everything Berhalter did for the team while also thinking differently in terms of the qualities the next coach should have for the next stage of development of the group.

Here's the full transcript of the interview. (I honestly don't entirely know what Schmetzer is saying here -- it kind of sounds like he might be on a different page from the interviewers, but the exchange seemed worth quoting in full more for what the interviewers said actually.).

Interviewer: Hey, before you go, I saw another coach, Matarazzo, has turned down the US men's national team, like the third or fourth person to say no to that job. What do you make of what's going on there, with their search for a new head coach? And have they called you yet?

Schmetzer (laughing): Well, they haven't called me yet. I would take the call for sure. But I don't know why people wouldn't want that job. I mean, for God's sakes, it's a national team where it's going to be the World Cup in their home country. I mean that's a pretty plush job if you ask me.

Interviewer 1: I have a theory why....Listen, we had a guy, J.T. Batson, the CEO of US Soccer, who was at your house in Long Acres a few months ago, and I asked him about the rehiring of Gregg Berhalter so many months ago or whatever last year, and he very much alluded to coaches...hearing the expectations of the US job and then saying "Nah, it's not exactly for me." I think this is about the Federation and the leadership of the Federation and Matt Crocker and the people who make the hire having wildly excessive expectations that prospective coaches look at and say, "Actually, I really am not interested in all of that."

Schmetzer: Well, then maybe they need an older coach who's coming to the end of his career for one last hurrah where that won't matter.

Interviewer 2: Well, I mean, but what, but what should the expectations be?

Schmetzer: To win, Softy. To win.

Interviewer 2: Right. So Jackson's telling me that somebody thinks the expectations are
    too high?

Interviewer 1: I think the expectations that are off the field stuff. I don't know what Crocker is putting out, the guy who's setting these expectations, but whatever is involved with that is clearly catching people off guard because just the words from J.T. Batson, it certainly seems like it's coming down from the Federation that's turning people away.

Interviewer 2: Gotcha. Well, Brian, if you're talking about an old guy in his last leg, that doesn't sound like you at all, by the way.

Schmetzer: I'm with you, Softy. I mean, coaches gotta come in here with confidence. They know they're a good coach, they can do a good job. They want to win. I mean, that's the bottom line.

Schmetzer wants a plush job with no pressure as a form of early retirement. He thinks no one expects anything from the NT. Either he was being sarcastic or he's going at it the wrong way. I suspect the former.

PS: Coaching the USMNT is low pressure compared to the coaching job for soccer-mad countries! The only thing that can make it difficult is the insane inflation of our players in the fan-base minds, but eventually most people will realize playing for a top team doesn't mean you're a top player.

Berhalter wasn't even an elite MLS coach when hired. Coaches, like Schmetzer, Cherundolo, Nancy, and Curtin, are on different level when compared to Gregg.

This possibility increases with each passing day. In all honesty, Cherundolo should pass on this job, but I think the potential for glory will be too enticing. It’s such a huge risk to take for him at this stage in his career.

If he takes this job, then all these haters will eat crow when he guides these boys to the World Cup Semi-finals!

Thierry Henry will probably be approached again especially if France beat Spain but he will also be approached by other teams as well and may turn us down. He did lobby pretty hard in the past for the job so ya never know.

Tyler said similar things as Zimm: doesn't matter where guys play & they need to fight for their spots. Of course Euro-centric analysts agree w/ him, since they say that's why players should go abroad.

I like the culture the leaders are demanding. Hopefully it transfers to whoever's hired as the front man, and we can start anew.
