Messi had 47 goals and 12 assists that season. Sneijder by comparison had 8 goals and 15 assists. The award went to the right player.
Sneijder team went through Messi team to win the UCL. The short list was Messi, Xavi and Ineista. So club form mattered except for Wes and international form mattered but didn't apply to Messi. To not make shortlist when everyone could see he was the man on that team. It is popularity contest. Actual performance is secondary. Might as well go by shirt sales then give out the award
I mean Messi was just the better player. If we’re supposed to give it to the best player in the world there’s no argument for it being given to anyone but Messi that year. We’re talking about Messi at the peak of his powers. It’s not about shirt sales, it’s about who actually had a better performance that year and there’s zero question it was Messi. And that Inter win over Barcelona was a fluke that came after Barcelona had to take a 14 hour bus ride to Milan because of volcanic ash.
So Italian Treble and World Cup runner-up that loses to also rans. That is the thing, if Messi has a season like Sneijder he wins, if he doesn't he wins. What is the point of it all then? Because if a really good player has a great season, better than he best in the world and told well we are voting for the reputation of the other guys then it is clear, it is not about the season you had.
KDB had 10 goals and 28 assists. I can't find a count for hockey assists that season but surely being the playmaker on a team that wins the treble should count.
I can't find any info on Hjulmand renewing his contract--except for in 2023. He stepped down and canceled the last year of his contract 2 weeks ago. At least, that's all the info the internet will tell me.
He did extend his contract till 2026 (see https://cphpost.dk/2023-06-07/news/two-more-years-danish-national-coach-extends-contract/) but I hadn’t realized he subsequently stepped down anyways.
Your argument might hold more weight if the winner didn't have like triple the direct production of the guy you're suggesting was really hard done by... seems straightforward as to why that might be compelling to the people deciding these awards, no?
So the best player on the best team means nothing. Because when Messi gets out produced by Lewy Goal, we hear but Messi was the best player that year look at his work With Argentina.
I think the Ballon D’Or should go to the player who’s been the best in the world that year. For many years since Messi and Ronaldo came onto to the scene it was almost always one of them. But there were years that we overrated things like what happened at the World Cup versus the year as a whole. I’ve already said last year should have been Haaland in my opinion. And in 2020 it went to Messi when it should have gone Lewandoski. 2020 was more off reputation versus Messi being the best and 2022 was really based on winning the World Cup. But in 2010 Messi was the best player in the world and it wasn’t really close. This year I would probably give it to Rodri and I think it’ll be either him or Vinicius Jr.
..."best player" on the "best team"? According to who, exactly? I think we're rounding around to the point... which is that it's obviously quite subjective. But the way you're talking about this, it's like you're for some reason upset the guy who has 60 goals + assists might win the "best player" award? That's just silly, and obtuse. I don't even care about Messi, I find the fawning over him sycophantic. But this just isn't some knockdown obvious case for Sneijder here -- NED didn't win the WC, and wasn't he like 5th in his club side in G+A on the season?
Charlie Davies seems to prefer him to Matarrazo (which is wrong). Henry has a lot to offer in this short window. Is it more than MP? Maybe not. I gotta agree with Charlie on the “it” factor with our best players though. Henry has more swag than MP
