Yeah but we are not Germany are we? Similar to Southgate, we don't have players that can make up for any coaching inefficiency. UAE is a bust up with admin which happens to coaching mercenaries. We all know coaching club and international are two very different things. In a full cycle, I have no problem giving a club coach time to learn and get acclimated. But in half cycle?!? With no qualification to test guys under pressure, you want to bring in a rookie. I don't see how it makes sense.
Bild went the furthest in treating this as something close to a done deal, but pretty much all of the major German sports news outlets reported some serious level of interest from the US and discussions between the two.
Well you have to look at the totality of his work. He had a very talented team, but the Dutch lost all 3 matches in UEFA 2012. In 2010, yes, they made it to the final, but played thug ball instead of traditional Dutch football. He was far too conservative and when everything was on the line, he did not believe in his players. He lacked the courage to win. In 2012 he did not create the disciplined environment that was required. In short, he was Berhalter before Berhalter was big.
I have a Tempur-Pedic mattress with an Eight Sleep smart bed cover. I would highly recommend Eight Sleep, especially their new Pod 4 Ultra. Investing in your sleep is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health and performance.
I'd also recommend magnesium supplements for many people even though I have no official affiliation with that particular industry. Sleep quality is more important than most realize and Eight Sleep is one of the most effective, albeit expensive, solutions I've found to optimize it. Its ability to improve deep, restorative sleep is consistent with core sleep science and validated not only by their own studies but also my own anecdotal experiences in using their products since beta as well as consistently better sleep data measurements from both my Oura Ring and Apple Watch. I'd recommend Mathew Walker's books or online videos for anyone looking for a good primer on the subject. And just for the record, I'm not Mathew Walker.
That squad sucked all the joy out of rooting for Dutch football. I've never been able to fully get back into enjoying their national team since--he had them play incredibly ugly, cynical football. And then he petulantly pocketed his runner-up medal before he was all the way off the podium. I'd have a REAL hard time embracing him as our manager.
he may be the only rival to mourinhos toxic assholeishness, so i dont know why anyone bothers but it is interesting so many major tournament semi- and final- appearances are dismissed (and i dont really care one way or the other) while southgate continues to hailed as overachieving somehow.
Fair point--my take on Southgate is that he deserves the plaudits in spite of never managing to win a tournament for two reasons: he managed to do very well over the course of several tournaments with a program that had been on the outside looking in for some time; and he seemed to have given both the squad and the nation a 'lift' in attitude and expectations. There's a whiff of confidence and optimism around the Three Lions that always seemed burdened and scared of defeat before his tenure.
Americans love British a-holes, see Piers Morgan and Simon Cowell and Downton Abbey. The ones from the continent have an unwanted accent that is harder and less sexy.
In the for what it’s worth category, I dropped an insane amount of money on a Tempurpedic mattress a few years back and regret it. Every night I woke up completely covered in sweat because the mattress is so hot and my joints hurt every morning. I’ve since bought a Sealy and sleep just fine, unlike Matt Crocker who I ask how he sleeps at night being so incompetent for hiring Berhalter again.
Hoffen-nein! Sandro Wagner rejects Hoffenheim advances as Pellegrino Matarazzo heavily linked with USMNT role (msn.com)
Schneider ironically thrived in Jose's Inter and BVM's Holland. And he was a joy to watch. Him not winning the BdO that year was when I gave up believing that award mattered.
To that point until US Soccer produces another Tab Ramos, who to me was the closest we ever came to Schneider like player, we will struggle
I mentioned during Copa America that Matarazzo had expressed interest then for the USMNT job. If you look at his record in Wikipedia with Stuttgart and Hoffenheim it is underwhelming. I don’t know if his record in the BL can be used to predict how well he would coach the USMNT, but he is home-grown and coached in a far better league than our possible candidates in MLS.
What do you think of the guy who brought Johnny to Betis? Here is a good interview. He doesn't seem like somebody who would take the USA job but his years in England likely mean language is not a problem. He's only 70. Your Dutch guy is a bit closer to 80. Would you take Pellegrini? Manuel Pellegrini on Man City, Pep Guardiola, West Ham & coaching Chile one day - BBC Sport When you achieve what a club needs to achieve, that is success. I can't pretend I can win La Liga or the Champions League with Betis, but we have had four successful years. When we won the cup [Copa del Rey], it was unbelievable - 300,000 people on the streets. I worked for Malaga. They had the most successful seasons in their history. When we lost to Borussia Dortmund [in the Champions League quarter-finals] there were 5,000 people at the airport waiting for the team at 4am. I worked at Villarreal, exactly the same. If you want to win titles there it will be difficult, but if you want the best season in the history of the club, you must be very satisfied.
🔵🆕 The clear tendency is that Pellegrino #Matarazzo will stay at TSG Hoffenheim ✔️There was a request from the U.S. men's national soccer team on manager‘s side. But no talks with Hoffenheim yet. No offer. Matarazzo, now planning the next transfers with Frank Kramer. ⚠️… pic.twitter.com/DZEqJuAqeC— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) August 5, 2024 Problem now that it’s out there if it’s going to be Matarazzo is has to move quickly. Cause otherwise he has to very publicly commit to staying (as a sitting coach can’t let word of his interest in another job just be out there like that).
Hoffenheim were headed to the cellar when Matarazzo took over in Feb 2023. 15 months later they qualified for Europa League. With regard to what happened in Stuttgart: Check out their squad on transfermarkt when the summer began and just after the transfer window closed. You'll see they sold their only 2 players worth over $20M and didn't replace them with anybody. They couldn't beat anybody with nobody so they fired Matarazzo. Ironically, Guirassy was brought in on last day of transfer season Sep 2022 on loan just 6 weeks before Matarzzo was fired. Guirassy was purchased at the end of that loan season for 14M and 12 months later was sold to Dortmund for 40M after bringing Stuttgart to 2nd place finish in BL just a point above Bayern. He scored a goal every 111 minutes for Stuttgart. Stuttgart is that kind of club and eval of their managers have to take that into consideration. DeBruyne was the straw that stirred the drink for ManCIty when they won their treble including winning the UCL but Ballon d'Or went to the InterMiami guy. They should put the FIFA Ballon d'Or in a museum. It's a joke.
Wait wait wait. Is this about Sneijder? To promote a Netherlandic coach it's a rule that you shouldn't change players' names to be in the language of the country whose team the Dutch despise the most. OK I'm not that serious but... hopefully I'm mixed up about who you're referring to.
This is such a common pattern with newly promoted clubs that it needs a term for it. In fact, Rino followed a very similar trajectory of Bielsa at Leeds, except they finished second in the 2.Bundesliga instead of crushing it like Leeds did the EFL Championship. Get promoted Amazingly finish top half of the top tier the next season See it crash down in your second top-tier season. Get fired before the end of season See someone else barely keep the club up.
