OMG that is an abysmal selection of coaches. The only ones who should even remotely be in consideration are De La Fuente, Poch, Benitez, Nancy, and Renard. Southgate and Viera even being mentioned is horrifying. Henry isn't good enough and Dolo is struggling in MLS. Of those I guess give me Benitez or Renard but man seriously is the money so poor or the perception that bad. We can't do better than this?
Guessing here, but I think that the person from NOLA news who is making up these numbers just read Doug McIntyre's article about Crocker wanting to hire a foreign coach and then just filled in the blanks from there. Southgate and Pochettino want PL jobs so they're long shots. DLF is using his interest as leverage. Henry, Vieira, and Renard are thought of as gettable foreign options. Again, just guessing, but I think the odds of someone not on the list at all getting the job are better than Henry's.
Those names have the highest odds attached to them because those are the names receiving the most buzz right now. In some cases, that's because there just hasn't been a lot of reliable reporting about actual discussions with specific named managers, so even a single off-hand mention by a reporter with a track-record about a random coach can generate a lot of buzz (which is definitely why Henry's name is so high). In other cases, there hasn't even been any specific reporting about those candidates -- rather just a lot of pieces explaining why the hire would make sense for whatever reason (which seems to be what's going on with Southgate and Renard).
It's still early in Thierry Henry's managerial career but I can't help but see the soccer manager version of Isiah Thomas with him. The rest I could at the very least gaslight myself into believing in. Henry however I'd have some serious doubts
I’d rather have allardyce than most of them. Going from Berhalter to Henry wouldn’t even be a lateral move.
your assessment of Cherundolo makes about as much sense as expecting Jesus Ferreira to win crosses vs Van Dyke in a knockout game.
The US Olympic team faces France managed by Henry Wednesday at 3ET. The Olympics will be an audition of sorts for Henry.. If he medals or ideally wins Gold his services will be very much in demand.
Monaco's finishes in Ligue Un 2 3 3 1 2 17 9 3 3 6 2 Guess which season Henry was in charge. I know there were other issues but that doesn't give me confidence.
On the surface that is a fascinating (post Mbappe) picture. Yet: It appears that Henry took the Monaco job Oct 18 with them in 18th place and was fired 3 months later after 20 matches with them in 19th place. You say they finished in 17th place that year? That says it all, they were a very bad team that year and not much better the next year. I hope that Henry does well in the Olympics and gets the France job. France has way too much talent to be playing the boring uninspiring soccer that they play.
Quadruple rep if I could! Thanks for putting this together for us! I wish this post could be pinned to the top of each page of this thread, and updated as things move along.
I have to remind myself that this is what USSF used to hire a manager last time: https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...rocess-in-the-search-for-the-usmnt-head-coach Sobering from ESPN Crocker's biases -- seemingly toward a McKinsey-type coach who can speak the technocrat language, nail the test scores and function as some kind of visionary figurehead -- led him to rehire Berhalter. If he follows the same path for his second hire, he'll likely land on someone who fits a very similar mold. https://www.espn.com/soccer/insider...occer-change-usmnt-coach-search-criteria-hire
LAFC kept some resources on the sideline so they can make a summer signing, Olivier Giroud. Their year end numbers will look different
Man, I’m sure there are hundreds if not thousands of professional coaches who would LOVE to “struggle” with a regular season “best points” mark, three cup/knockout finals while winning one, and the third best record in another regular season……
Due to the parity in MLS, its very difficult to maintain success over a multi-year period. Ask Philadelphia and Jim Curtin. Ask SKC and Peter Vermes. Ask St. Louis and Austin right now. Coaching is important, though. Look at New England before and after Bruce Arena. They went from Supporter's Shield winner with Bruce to the worst team in the East. I think its quite right to say at the moment Nancy and Cherundolo should be the top domestic candidates. Its interesting that nobody is ever talking about what Pat Noonan has done in Cincinnati. It was Pat Noonan that won the Supporters Shield in 2023. It was Pat Noonan that was MLS Coach of the Year in 2023. Then Cincy and Columbus played an extremely tight Eastern Conference final that the Crew won in extra time. So then the MLS Cup final was Crew versus LAFC. And again, Cincinnati is challenging for the SS right now in 2024. Anyway, I'm not implying we should hire Noonan. its just strange to me that his name is never mentioned. The gap between him and Nancy's teams on the field in MLS seems absolutely minimal. In case people have forgotten, Cincinnati finished in last place the year prior to Noonan's arrival. He's not the only reason they've gotten better, but he has to be one of them. Teams seem to win wherever Noonan has gone throughout his career as a player and coach. Coincidence? Maybe or maybe not. [He also, of course, has been an assistant coach with the USMNT in the past.]
Majority of our players play in top leagues in Europe, Champion League, and Europa League; getting paid millions a year. We need a coach that demand instant respect and admiration from the players. How many coaches meet that criteria? It's a tough market out there.
Same here. Given I’m the one on the bandwagon of “does experience really matter in international management”, it’s kind of shortsighted to not mention him. He’s already made a USOC semi and a MLS Cup semi after taking a team over that could not have been any lower.
Well............yes and no. Did nations like Japan, Croatia, and Morocco have these types of managers at the World Cup? No. The recent Spain versus England final at the Euros didn't have those kids of coaches at all. Spain's coach was a guy they'd promoted from within the Spanish FA. He'd gone up the ranks from U19s to U21s to U23s to the full national team. Southgate wasn't a particularly successful club manager. What did Argentina's coach win before becoming their head coach? What was his experience? Squadoosh. He'd only ever managed the Argentina U20s. Now he's won two Copa Americas and a World Cup. And you see this throughout international soccer at the highest levels. It doesn't seem like a coach with a vaunted reputation that "demands instant respect" is actually needed. You just gotta get the right fit. You can bring in a guy like Mexico brought in Sven Goran Eriksson, and it just isn't the right fit at all. A man who won trophies at Roma, Lazio, and even Sampdoria in Italy. A man who won everything there was to win in Portugal. Had coached England. Had coached Man City. What did it translate to with Mexico? Nothing.
Wilfried Nancy to #USMNT? 🇺🇸The Columbus Crew head coach is "interested in everything." 👀 pic.twitter.com/6cucmOV11O— Golazo America (@GolazoAmerica) July 23, 2024
He was one of the handful of names Arena mentioned in his recent interview when he was asked who the best up and coming US coaches in MLS are. I’d rank him behind Nancy and Cherundolo though.
