Hurzeler was born to non-American parents and raised in Germany. He is in his first big job and is 31. His situation is not similar to Matarazzo's. In any event, I don't know these guys and their priorities. Who knows what the decisions will be once a dump truck filled with money backs into the front yard.
No apples and oranges IMO. Rehiring Berhalter for continuing the process made some sense. That didn't pan out to more improved performance.
It's similar in that both are just into a Top 4 coaching job at relatively or very young ages, and you simply don't walk from those.
I'm looking a little closer at Renard and I'm not that impressed. After beating Argentina it was really bad. Besides losing the rest of their group games they lost three times at the Gulf Cup and then were beaten at home friendlies by Venezuela and Bolivia (!?!?!?) That is all kinds of bad. Bolivia has two away wins in the last two years. Andorra and Saudi Arabia. His time with Morocco would be considered decent since they had not qualified in 20 years but in retrospect the squad was obviously talented enough. His big claim to fame are the two AFCON trophies but those are from over a decade ago.
Let me throw some new names out there: Claudio Ranieri - Led Leicester City to Premier League title in 2015 - greatest coaching achievement ever. Rafa Benitez - He's available! Greg Vanney - Won MLS Cup in Toronto, decent coach with international playing experience. Pablo Mastroeni - I like his fire and enthusiasm. Good motivator. Great player.
Herve Renard: Preferred formation: (whatever he feels like): Pros: Won AFCON with a pure minnow, Zambia. He won it again, but this time, with a talented Ivory Coast side. With Morocco, the team qualified for the first time since 1998. With Saudi in '22, the team qualified for the WC for first time since '06. In Group Stages, they defeated Messi's Argentina. The last time the US defeated an elo top-5 team in a World Cup was 1950. Cons: Never coached internationally in Europe or the Americas
Possibly, I think Southampton had a great academy because they drilled an attacking mindset that started with an aggressive defending. So if Crocker is part of that process I can see a lesser Barca/Pep possession and more of a Gasperini style of quick attacks from defense. As to why Sergio, I love the way he manages. As for why he'd want the job, AVB took over Porto Pres and he bowed out. He wants to get a big 5 job, all those are filled. He will be waiting for at least 6 months for a job. Taking a short term 2 year NT job with a lot of visibility seeing as it's a home WC would grant him a lot of exposure. Make a quarters run or deeper and those jobs come up a lot quicker. I dont know that he'd be interested at all, but if I'm Crocker there's no doubt I call him before I do Dolo (who I believe will need a 4 year cycle to be successful, but would be successful eventually).
Cons: Lost six games in a row after Argentina including three straight losses in Gulf Cup group phase followed by two friendly home defeats to Venezuela and Bolivia. Yes, that Bolivia.
Just sacked by Celta. He really liked Luca de la Torre: Así analiza Benítez (@rafabenitezweb):-Las características y posibilidades de Luca de la Torre.-La situación de Joseph Aidoo, que no está siendo un fijo para él. This your post I responded to: "I see Dolo as no different than GGG. A replacement level coach. He'd do fine and I'd expect results very similar to what we had under GGG. That is NOT what I want to see heading to WC 2026". I'm not sure that Dolo and GB have any coaching similarities.
Yea. I’m a lifelong Liverpool fan. We won games with him, hell we won the Champions League. But Rafa Benitez is the definition of tactically restricting. Plus he’s a dinosaur. Not a good fit for the international game.
Maybe, however he fits the two criteria. A known winner (especially knockouts) and has development chops (Xabi, Torres, Luis Garcia).
Have you seen what the winning teams in the international game are doing? It's very defensive. Even Spain go in to a defensive shell the moment they are up in the score.
Yes and I would much prefer Southgate to Benitez. Did you watch every game Liverpool played in the late 2000s?
Only the knockout rounds of the CL. Which is exactly what the international game is about especially if you don't have qualifiers.
More out of the box names: Laurent Blanc - Won Ligue 1 several times. Coached France. Rudi Garcia - Europa league runner-up in 2017-18. Massimiliano Allegri - Just left Juventus. Knows McKennie and Weah. Roberto Mancini - Coaching Saudi Arabia, but they want Herve now? Niko Kovač - Has coached Bayern Munich and Croatia. Available. Diego Simeone - Has coached at Atletico Madrid for 14 years. Not sure if he would leave.
The biggest problem of US coaches is that we don't do well at knockout rounds. We get exposed every damn CCL. That's my biggest worry with Chero. He's a great team builder but knockouts are not always his thing.
