Sources tell ESPN that the USSF Board of directors is meeting shortly to approve the hiring of Mauricio Pochettino as #usmnt manager.— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) September 8, 2024
Good chance but that’s how it goes with some of these coaches. Ancelotti also employs his son at Real Madrid. You see it in US sports too. Jim Harbaugh employed his son at Michigan (and his son I thought was a very good coach). Sometimes it’s a nepotism hire like in the case of Iowa and sometimes the son ends up actually being good at coaching. With Pochettino’s son I have no idea.
It’s a mixed bag. There are lots of bad nepotism hires out there in sports (the majority probably?), but they aren’t always bad in every case. And for Pochettino his son’s role was fairly junior. From an article about his Chelsea staff https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...aff-Mauricio-Pochettino-bringing-Chelsea.html Sebastiano, the oldest of Pochettino's two sons, has been the newest addition to the coaching set-up. He initially started working for Tottenham in 2016 as a sport science assistant, before being promoted to the first team’s sport scientist and fitness coach. His promotion made him the youngest sports scientist in the Premier League at the age of 22. Pochettino then held the same role at PSG and looks likely to do the same at Chelsea. His initial appointment to Tottenham’s coaching staff in 2016 came as he received a first class honours degree from Southampton Solent University in Applied Sports Science, while he worked at the university as a strength and conditioning coach. Pochettino later completed a Masters in the 'Integrative Biology of the Adaptations to Exercise for Health and Performance' at Paris-Saclay University. The fluent English, French and Spanish speaker has said he specialises in providing injury prevention and strength and conditioning sessions. Mauricio Pochettino dismissed suggestions of nepotism back in 2017, insisting that players trusted his son and suggested he could one day work for another manager.
Pochettino after viewing the USA x Canada game: USSF: Do you still want to come? Pochettino: You know it, babe.
I am so excited. Poch has a very unique opportunity here. If he can get our players to play better than the sum of their parts (currently it is the opposite) then the USMNT could turn it around in time to make waves at the WC.
It's almost 4 PM EDT. Where the heck is the announcement? Who is Mr. Tejano? He stuck his neck out, so this better happen today.
Would love the Poch hire. Not a fan of any Poch Jr. hire. Especially when he's the "sports science" coach and his teams have a reputation for getting injured a lot. I'd grin and bear it, but.
I'm nervous that either the MLS guys or some zealots on the women's side of the equation (obviously not Emma Hayes) are holding this up. Would suck if we wake up tomorrow and find that Crocker resigned, Poch is a no-go, and Cherundolo becomes the head coach.
The Berhalter firing was announced by the USSF at around 6:29 EDT that day. Think there's some time before we start to really worry.
It's now 4pm eastern time.......... Starting to wonder if this person is completely reliable after their 127th Poch report turned out to be wrong
