Seattle Sounders kicked off pre-season training on Monday without a key player in tow…Freddie Ljungberg.

The former Arsenal star is currently considering offers from other clubs outside of MLS after expressing concern about the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement on his personal blog.

Ljungberg still has a year to run on his two-year deal with the Sounders and would be a major loss for the club after an impressive debut season in MLS in which he was selected for the Best XI for season 2009.

Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer said he was aware of Ljungberg’s absence and was hoping to sort something out with his management soon.

"Freddie is a player that has option in Europe," said Hanauer. "There have been teams that are interested. It's day-to-day. We're in communication with his representation.

"We would like it if he were here today, but it's not a surprise to us that he's not here."

His absence was not well-received by goalkeeper Kasey Keller who is of firm belief that a player should honour his contract when he commits to a club.

“As far as I’m concerned, if you’re under contract and you’re supposed to be somewhere, then you go,” Keller said.
