When comparing the value of attacking players, the number of goals scored is a superior measure to 'field of play goals' since they all count precisely the same for the purpose of, well, winning games. Christian Benteke won the 2024 Golden Boot because he scored 23 goals, not 20 "real goals" and 3 "penalties"? Of course, Bouanga scored 7 penalties out of 19 goals, so he should not have even been considered among the top goal scorers. This is such a pointless discussion that I never want it to end! As a backup forward I would also grab Burke if able to be had for cheap salary. He always seems dangerous when against the Fire.

You guys and your PKs. Pretty funny. Let me see if I have this correct. One side says a PK still counts as one goal and the other side says the skill required to make one is less than a field shot. Both sides could be right! How about a new idea regarding PKs. Because (roughly) 75% of all PKs taken are scored, the majority of the value arises from the act of getting a PK called. Why not credit this player with 3/4 of a goal and the successful PK taker with 1/4 goal? An idea like that should win some sort of award. ( he ducks)
PKs are scored at a high rate because the best PK takers get to shoot. There is a drop off in conversion rate for each player in a shootout, essentially proving that the expected average conversion rate would be way lower than the actual conversion rate because the team picks who gets to take the shot.
You forgot to mention that the goalies get better at higher level play. The conversion rate is still what it is. The much lower success rate on field shots kinda proves that PK goals require less skill . (I am still not serious - but where is my award.)
Right, the best make 96+%…most are better than 50/50…and it averages out to mid to high 70s. the ball is stationary, there is 1 non charging defender, and it’s at close range. field of play is infinity, there is traffic, and shot range is more often from further distance. Wonder what the field of play shot conversion rates are?
