Unfortunately Shaqiri is not a starter...road the bench.

I didn't catch that Antoine signed a new contract last summer...there has been lots of chatter about the 32yr old wanting to play in the US.

Memphis (if healthy) would be less than Hugo...

Yes, we could use a Kubik or Friedrich replacement, but this SOB would not be it.
My absolute least favorite player of all time.

Note, I am not a Memphis Depay fan.

That's nuts. You really have no perspective or objectivity.
"If healthy"?!? He played over 30 matches for Atletico this past season and started for Netherlands in the Euro.

Hugo Cuypers is 27 (almost three years to the day younger than Depay).
He played for a second division team in Greece, Greek first division, two seasons in Belgian first division and MLS.
Highest European competition was the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
He was top scorer for Greece and Belgium.
    ZERO caps for Belgium.

    Memphis Depay is 30.
He has played for PSV, Man U, Lyon, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, from 2011-present.
He has 94 caps and 45 goals for The Netherlands, second all time for Netherlands. He scored 17 goals for Netherlands in 2021 alone!
He played in three World Cups, and has scored in all three World Cups and the 202(1) Euro.
He has won the Eredivisie, the FA Cup, La Liga, third place in the World Cup, and was top scorer for the UEFA qualifications for World Cup 2022.
He has played in 40+ or so Champions League matches with Lyon, Man U and Barcelona (with multiple goals),

When he was the same age as Hugo, he had:
Played won (and was top scorer) for Eredivisie
Played for Manchester United (including playing in Champions League and winning the FA Cup)
Played for Barcelona (playing over a dozen Champions League matches)
Played in TWO World Cups, scoring two goals.
Played in EURO 202(1), scoring two goals.

His coach doesn’t think he can play two games in four days so prioritized the game against Germany I suppose. That said, Shaqiri’s response was so professional I’m still shocked at the negative reactive to him here. He’s a consummate professional and team player.

On the surface, looks like good player management. Given how well he performs for the Swiss, took guts for the coach to rest him. He may even have a small ding.

The coach talked about months ago so I don’t think it was a big deal.

    Again: look at Shaqiri’s response.

Never saw that but did see where the coach said he needed someone that could/would also also play defense in that match. Followed by some awkward translation ‘Shaqiri has his traits, we need different for this match’

Dude, I know who he is:rolleyes:

He’s had some nagging issues the last couple of years.

I presumed you did since YOU brought him up.

Who the f*ck has missed games due to injury? What an asinine comment.
He played over 30 matches in the 2023-2024 in La Liga! and is a starter for the Dutch National Team (and second all time leading scorer).

Your comment was that Depay "would be less than Hugo..." (whatever that means)
You have no perspective at all.

I’ve posted articles here so it shouldn’t be tough. I think they expected to beat Scotland and Hungary and want him against Germany? I don’t know. But this was all talked about months ago so people posting at it like it’s “news” are obviously looking for sensationalism.

That was about the dollar amount you posted…10mil

    Your perspective is snark.

    No, my perspective is realty.

You said he would be "would be less than Hugo," I didn't.

If you meant he would earn less than Hugo, that is something else entirely (and probably completely untrue).

He made $10 million last season. There is no snark, it's a fact.

Why would a guy at 30, making $10 million in the top league in the world, and starting for one of the world's top national teams, agree to make less than $3.5 million to play in Chicago?

Yes, the comment was in response to the dollar figure you stated…for some reason you heard it as me bagging on Memphis:rolleyes:
My understanding is Hugo is 12mil….which is more… Im not sure why this is upsetting to you

Hugo earns $3.5 million a year.

Hugo's transfer fee was $12 million, true.
If that's what you meant, that is what you should have said.

Depay would be on a free, as I stated previously in post 2825.

    Free sounds great!
Maybe he’ll play for the 8mil we are about to free up:p

Wow, those goal posts are moving far, far, aren't they?
He has gone from being "less than Hugo" to making Shaqiri money?

If Shaqiri leaves, replacing him with Memphis Depay could be a good decision.
Not my first choice, but a good option.

    Swap Memphis for Shaq???
    SIGN ME UP!!!

Edit: No goal post moving, just 2 people hearing/reading different interpretations. Would appreciate some level of 'presumed innocent' instead of reflexing to some kind of insult.

My guess is that a large signing bonus is expected by DePay.

Wasn't courage...coach said he needed someone that would also help on D to beat .

The thing about fitness came from some in the press questioning his fitness...as his MLS production has declined.

Shaq retorted something along the lines of 'it's almost embarrassing to have to answer this question...every player who comes to the national team can and wants to play, and that's for the full 90 minutes. I haven't come to the Euro on vacation."

No need to lie. Consummate professional.

“Did he really say that? I already gave my answer to this: I’m here with the national team because I want to help the team and play as much as possible,”
he commented, insisting that “there are no agreements about my exact role.”

He suggested that he is in “transparent exchange” with Yakin, and added that “if I come from the bench, I’m ready to help the team like that. I’m also here to hep the boys deal with the pressure. It doesn’t matter how long you’re on the pitch – in this shirt, you always give everything. I didn’t travel here for a holiday.”

Just read the MIR article on Arigoni. Good reading. It said Fire think Barlow is faster than Arigoni. Big Surprise to me! ( Arigoni wants to race him.) I have not seen that in the limited minutes Barlow has played. Any thoughts on the speed of Barlow? Is he really that fast? No question about Arigoni, he is very fast.

I know Toni Kroos announced he is retiring after the Euro, but I would like the Fire to back up the truck for him.

He said he was retiring from "Professional football," so I am not positive that includes MLS

    Fortunately, Shaqiri is starting.
His 124th cap and, what, 6th or 7th major tournament?
