Manchester United defender Jonny Evans says the players are confident of overturning Manchester City's 2-0 lead in tonight's second-leg of their Carling Cup semifinal.

Home ground advantage and the experience of players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville will be key to the Reds’ chances of reaching Wembley, according to the 22-year-old defender.

“City did well last Tuesday to come back from a goal down,” Evans told manutd.com. “Fair play to them. But I thought we played pretty well and we were in control for most of the game.

“[Tonight] will be very exciting. We’re at home and the fans always rise to the big games. Night time games at Old Trafford are usually special. It will have that feel about it. It is up to the players to make it a special night for Manchester United. The only way you can do that is by winning the game.

“Manchester United don’t lose many semi-finals so maybe we know how to [handle the big-game pressure] a little bit more. The experience is there. We’ve got lots of players who have got to finals with this club and are still here. City don’t really have that.”

While Evans is confident United will reach another major final tonight, he acknowledges City’s emergence as a genuine trophy threat.

“It’s great for the city of Manchester. They are in the semi-final of the League Cup. Maybe they are not in the title race at the minute but the experience Roberto Mancini is going to bring to them from his time in the Italian league is going to have them challenging for a few more trophies.”
