Rumour in the Sun is that the Glazers have given Fergie the green light to go after Michael Essien.
However, another dodgy source reports that Chelsea have already tabled a bid for 26m which has been rejected by Lyon, who are probably holding out for as much cash as they can.

I can understand where Lyon are coming from but this is just ridiculous..MORE than 26 mill? Get the hell outta here! What else has he won besides French Cups? Gimme a damn break.

Well they just want keep him, and if they have to give him up, they will get as much out of it as they can.

It'll probably end up at around 30m which is crazy money for him. Its not like he is Ronaldinho, or even a Gerrard or Keane yet. 30m could get us an excellent central midfielder as well as a top drawer central defender.

Essien is Lyons Gerrard. But i dont think we are going to get him personally. He is worth the 25 million bid for him. If you saw him play in the champions league and the French league, you would know. He is just all over the place.
But over £30mil, would be a little ludacris.

I think even 25m is ludicrous for Essien. Frankly, he's just been hyped up too much, and a player who should be worth 15m is being touted for nearly double the price. I think the last thing we want to do is enter a bidding war with Chelsea (and we shouldn't forget that they were willing to pay 24m for Drogba - even without a bidding war!).

He is 25m purely for the fact that they dont want to sell him. They know he isnt valued at 25m, but if you can get a ridiculous sum to let go of one of your most valuable players then why not? Either way you win, because you either keep him which you want, or get 26m.

It's still ****************. Screw them, we'll grow our own youth players (Jones/Fletcher) and spend that money on other players who are WORTH it like Julio Baptista or Ballack. We can buy maaad players with that money!

No, that's how much his buyout clause is. He's probably in the 10m-15m bracket. Possibly a little more if we're in a bidding war with l'Arse.

Just asking. I read, "spend that money on people who are worth it" lol. I instantly thought that he meant Baptista was worth £25 mill. Sorry.

at the same time... strikers... or scorers of goals have always been more expensive... I dont think 25M for someone who scored 50 goals in 2 seasons is a rediculous amount of money.

Lyon are out of their mind if they think WE will spend that kind of money on Essien... not with the talent we have. Hell, for that kind of money we can get Andrade and Mascherano and still have some money left over to pay the wages of Rio and Figo.

It would be a silly move for us to spend upwards of 20M on a DM really just silly.

Yeah, that's what you get for rushing to reply all the time... READ READ!!! Read and understand before you speak.

johno: And it seems even more silly considering we spent like what 3.75 mill for Roy Keane, who was infinitely better in his time.

I'm not saying we need an attacker... I think he'd probably score 15 from midfield in a box to box role next to Keane, I was noting that people who score goals generally cost more than people who don't. I'd not be behind us signing Baptista if I thought we'd use him as a forward.

I see, i just dont know how things will work. When is Keano retiring anyway. Not rushing him though.

Real Betis has said they wont sell Joaquin for less than £40 million. Thats what his buy out clause is. The GM also said that why would we sell him if he is happy.

Great, they can hold onto him and then lose him for nothing when his contract is over. Or maybe they're trying to milk Chelsea for as much as possible. Frankly, I hope Abramovich calls their bluff.

Actually, though it seems like pocket change now, at the time it was a British transfer record. We also broke the transfer record on his predecessor, Bryan Robson. If we are actually going to open the checkbook, historically we've done it to fill the midfield anchor position.

Yeah I was aware of that, but I still think it's silly when you look at the numbers. 26 mill+ on one hand, 3.75 mill on the other.

True. I think it mostly shows how bloated the transfer market has become over the past decade (and before the ABUs show up, yes we're partially to blame). I do think more than £24m at most is enough for Essien.
