Just posting that here instead of the closed thread. And I was finally the last poster in a thread. Yay, or something.

So it looks lik we might be signing Abdoulaye Meite from Marseille but only if he pulls out of the Nations cup?

If we are smart we'd go after Glen Johnson. I think there is a chance Chelski might let him go. I could be very wrong though.

That's all the info the www.worldsoccerweekly scandal sheet had for me today.

Chelsea are considering letting defender Glen Johnson leave on loan for the rest of the season. (Times)

Newcastle coach Graeme Souness hopes to sign Marseille's Ivory Coast defender Abdoulaye Meite if he pulls out of the African Nations Cup. (Mirror)

Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Italy striker Christian Vieri on a short-term deal for the rest of the season. (Mirror)

    Thx,

    Jay!

Veiri just got voted the worst striker in Italy. Why on earth would the Spurs want him?

Johnson's an England international (or was, has he been recalled since his attitude issue?). He may be good to have, too (if the attitude's no longer an issue).

From Vitalfootball, in regards to the possibility of buying Meite. The piece says that Shepherd HAS given Souness a small kitty to buy players (no more than 5m, I'd guess), but that he would be more keen to buy from British-based teams given the circumstances.

Well, if Souness wants English players, or at least players with experience in the Premiership, Glen Johnson and/or Wayne Bridge would go a long way in improving our back 4. But I'm not holding my breathe on either of them. Although Bridge had better do something to get some minutes or he won't be on the squad in Germany. Johnson is likely already hopelessly out of the running. Huth may also fall into this category (possibly loaned-in).

Any of the three would be a good addition, even on loan. Face it, any club that starts Robbie Elliott (in his current, and probable future, form) and aspires to a European place is stuck in a fantasy world. "Ohh, if only we could get our 19 year old first choice central defender back on the pitch..." Yikes.

If Souness wants players with Premiership pedigrees, that could possibly actually maybe be signed (that is, they are not currently starting for another Premiership side), he could do a lot worse than Danny Higganbotham and Gary Doherty. Big strong lads that can score the occasional goal and have played in the premiership. Niether would arrive with gold-plated "I expect to play every game" attitude, either.

If Moore ever plays he will be the equivalent of a new signing, as will Dyer. Souness will count that as a new defender and a new mid... So at the end of it all I bet we have one new signing, probably Anelka, and one loan signing, a defender that will clearly be an emergency stopgap. Anelka because he would be a reasonable replacement for Shearer alongside Owen in the future. And a defender cause even my sister is better than Elliott and she is available.

I've heard that Newcastle might try to get Anelka from Fenerbahce...

The FSC transfer page is reporting that Robert is gone to Benfica. From Portsmouth??? Isn't he still our property? Shouldn't NUFC be collecting the fee?

    Thx,

    Jay!

    Yeah..

Basically now I think he is just trying to win a few of the supporters back, and everyone knows they loved watching matches under Keegan.

We can't possibly be that desperate, that we would take the worst striker in Italy, can we? Luque should come good sometime before April, and we've got Shearer, and ...:( We might actually be that desperate.

Well, the fine beacon of respectable journalism 'News of the World' is reporting that Mourinho basically said that he'll sell anyone who's unhappy or puts his World Cup aspirations ahead of the team. Blue-light specials, mayhaps?

    Newcastle bid for Nihat

I recall Picaraza mentioning him in the summer transfer thread as a positively lethal finisher. Don't know much else about him except Emre really wants him in the black and white.

Nihat is quality, and we can get him cheap as well this is great news, seeing as though other alternatives are pure pants really.

Anyone here actually believes that vieri is bad is a damned fool.. i defy you to look at his scoring stats over the years. IMHO, he's in the top 10 strikers of the last decade. Also, as a previous poster pointed out, moore will be coming back at some stage, and, as an aussie, i can assure you that he is absolutely brilliant- he's the captain of our NT, takles strongly and rarely makes mistakes
