Wait a month or two until it gets warm outside. You can head down to the Mall and play every single day of the week with people from all over the globe and with varying skills. That is probably your best place to start.
You can also contact the Screaming Eagles Football Club. We have several teams and pick up games on Saturdays. You do have to be a member of the SEs to participate. Send an email to sefc@screaming-eagles.com K
Have any of you played in leagues besides WISL? I live in the Arlington area and am curious as to the level of play compared to WISL. Wouldn't mind switching over to a league where matches would be closer to home.
I have played in NVSL and CSL. IMO whatever division you interested in in another league is comparable to the division lower in WISL i.e. Premier in NVSL is equivalent to 1st division WISL. This is a broad generality but overall I think is accurate. You will always find an exception, but this is based on my personal experience and on Cup results over the last few years.
i don't know where in NW you live, but there are great pick up games in Malcolm X park on 16th street. a fairly mixed crowd, lots of different skill levels. a friend who hadn't played much at all before that and i both played there and had fun.
Does anyone on these boards play at the Fairfax Sportsplex in Springfield? I understand that the new "season" starts in March or April.
Fairfax I play there in a league now. The field is tiny and you literally play on a carpet, but the pace is great. This season my club is playing on the 5v5 field, and the speed is QUICK. If you are not fit, your team will get dusted rather quickly. The skill is fairly high since there are so few players on the pitch at one time. Negatives: Place is pretty run down and you sometimes (like I did last night) have midnight matches in the middle of the week. Positives: REALLY cheap to play, pace is fast, skill is above average, most people are friendly, and they serve beer for post match celebration/anguish. If you live south of the city, it BLOWS AWAY playing at Barcroft if only for the fact you play with a real ball.
