You gonna give a link, or just toss out wildly unsubstantiated rumors? (Don't worry, this is BigSoccer, so that's perfectly acceptable.)
Here's a link for you Remember it's only a rumor for now, but if it's true it's yet another case of poor casting.
The Beyonce thing was apprently just a rumor, but the guys at Ain't it Cool are pretty sure Depp will be Luthor. I like Depp in that role. If you saw him in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, you know he can play the bad guy, can be amoral and a snake. However this means Depp will steal every scene he is in, since that is what he does the best. Who else could get an Oscar nom playing a Keith Richards inspired pirate? However Depp has already signed on to do the remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (with Tim Burton!), which, I believe, comes out around the same time as Superman, so there could be a conflict. Wasn't Superman already cast? Some complete unknown?
Johnny Depp can pull it off ... I wouldn't worry too much about that. Whether he'll get the chance or not remains to be seen.
The persistant rumor for the role of superman has been Tom Welling from Smallville. Tom continues to deny the possibility but refuses to rule it out if cast. As far as Beyonce being Louis Lane, no way. She's so over hyped it's unreal. She should stick to hanging out with Jigga and singing. As far as Depp as LL, that would be intriguing. I just wonder if he'd be bald LL or not. Remember for a time in the comic LL had curly red hair, ala Gene Hackman in the old Superman movies.
on ain't it cool yesterday there was a story saying Beyonce isn't happening. Lemme find the link ... well, my computer keeps spinning its wheels. it's right there on the main page as of Friday morning. I'll post the link if the website ever kicks in.
Oh goodness! That would have been a mistake beyond all reperation! I have never been a fan of D.C. comics, but I do enjoy the better flicks based on their properties. However I am very worried that these new D.C. movies are going to flop harder than a IHOP pancake. umm..heh heh There was a small rumor, read in Wizard magazine, that Lex Luthor was going to be from Krypton in the new Supes movie. It is an idea, luckily among many others of course, that is at least being kicked around by the folks writing the script. I mean what the *#*#*#*#*#*#?
Much in the way Gene Hackman did in the old Supermans. If the Beyonce thing ends up being true, there's gonna be a whole bunch of fanboys boycotting this movie.
Superhero Hype says that Bruce Willis may be up for the Lex Luthor role.... ...don't know how I feel about that... I can't really see him as LL, but then again, I may come out thinking he could be one heck of a casting choice....
Well the rumor is back, according the AICN McG really wants Beyonce to be Lois Lane. This movie is begining to suck before it's ever cast.
You mean McG, the hack music video director best known for his work with Smash Mouth and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle? Oh lawdy.
It will be a huge blow to D.C. comics movie making hopes if they screw up this film. And it will be a pitty because the company really does have alot of great movie potential material to draw from. Getting Superman right the first time is crucial and from what I have heard here and in other places, like Wizard magazine, it looks like this movie is on the fast track to ruin. I do, however, like the idea of Bruce Willis as Lex Luther. That might actually be a great idea and might even make up for the terrible Beyonce casting if she does get the part.
OK, since I'm not a comic book fanboy, can somebody tell what exactly would be wrong with casting Beyonce as Lois Lane?
I'm curious too. It can't be that Beyonce is black, because Lois Lane was never a race-specific character. Her acting ability? Sure, she's no Meryl Streep to be sure, but she was adequate, if not great, in Austin Powers 3. Anyway, casting's nowhere near as important as the directing - a good director can coax good performance out of a bad actor (see Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight). Unfortunately, McG is not that director, and Superman fans should be more outraged about the choice of director than anything else.
Lois Lane was a race-specific character. She was and still is white. In the comics, movies and various tv series. Part of the reason that people are outrages is in fact because she's black. It would be like casting Nicholas Cage as Bishop from X-men.... it's just not right. Not to mention Beyonce can't act to save her life.
I have to agree with Dante. I don't think it's so much against Beyonce as an actress or person but that is the character of Lois Lane. It has to do with the comics from years and years and years ago. Casting her is transparent anyway... a pure marketing ploy. Get whoever's the hottest icon right now. There are other girls that could play Lois. I don't mean for this to sound prejudiced but I wouldn't recommend swapping the race of the character. You know how those people (comic book fans) are. For the longest time I had heard of Paul Walker being cast for the role. (shudder). Tom Welling would be good but I think his problem with it was jeopardizing the role in the television show. Otherwise the guy's a pretty good actor and fits the role, at least in the tv show, perfectly IMO.
So basically because Superman was created back in the '30s, when comic books were lily-white, does that also mean that the movie adaptations should be lily-white? Like I said, I'm not a comic book fanboy, but I can't think of a single major character in the Superman comic that's not white: Superman - honky from another planet Lois Lane - honky Lex Luthor - honky Perry White - honky Jimmy Olsen - honky Ma and Pa Kent - honkies And the list goes on. I'm not saying that comic books have to have all colors of the rainbow represented, but at the same time, I don't think that the director of a Superman movie in 2004 should have to be constrained by what was acceptable in the 1930s.
OK, forget Beyonce. Are you telling me that if the director wanted Halle Berry to play Lois Lane, you'd be opposed?
