not to hate.. but will the metrostars pleassse pull an FC Dallas and change thier name if they ever get a new stadium??? As an ex season ticket holder of many years, does anyone else think that the word metrostar is simply childish?? It was hard to get attached to something that I felt belonged as a symbol of a sat afternoon power ranger show, nevermind a team representing the NYC area.. Bring back the cosmos (i know the rights to this will cost money but cmon, this name carried global appeal for obvious reason).. or change it to ny inter, ny fc, anything that doesn't sound like a gimic to americanise the world's game. as a closing point, i remember a sat afternoon in 96 with about 56k in the stands (w/o england or the world all stars playing next) .. the damage has been done , this will never happen again (thanks charlie) ... why not start from square one if we get a stadium - just my thoughts
The name is not the problem. Does the Galaxy nickname stop LA from being successful? The only thing I would suggest is adding FC at the end, maybe that would stop people from still using NY/NJ.
name aside .. the galaxy have put some decent teams on the field over the years.. they have also tapped into their fan w/ some great foreign signings - we havnt (lothar does not count) - ok donadoni produced , but for too short a time
Finally, it's been far too long since we had one of these threads. I was scared we would go a couple months without talking about changing the name. I think it's pretty obvious that we should call them Chelsea FC since they are the best team in the world apparently. Afterall they won a title after 50 years maybe we can do the same.
What I don't get is why anyone would name their football club after President Clinton's daughter. I mean, sure, I'd bang her, but I wouldn't name my team after her.
I think Advil should get naming rights for the new stadium. Then maybe they would give out free samples if the Metros blew a lead after the 75th minute.
I think Viagra said something about wanting to sponsor the supporters group at the new stadium. Something about.. "We Stand With You For All 90 Minutes!" "We Never Let You Down!"... "We're Always Up For the Metros!" stuff like that..
I think "Metros FC" would be good. Hopefully they lose the Metros logo on front, & get some big sponsor to pay 1 Mill for Ad rights on the front
I think it would be a good idea to remove the Metros logo on the front, but I think a patch on the front is fine for now. American sports fans aren't used to having corporate logos on the front of sports jerseys -- but I think that the strategy some other teams are using (Chicago Fire, DC United, Kansas City, etc.) of putting the logo on the sleeves and back of the jersey would work. After all, most of the time, we are watching from behind a soccer player anyway because they are constantly running the ball toward the goal.
METROSTARS name should stay the way it is. It's original and the fact that you don't have the NY/NJ attached to it makes it better. Makes people (who are not familiar with MLS) wonder what city the team is from, which I think is cool.
Um, no... Reminds me of how clothing manufacturers put things like "Goddess" or "Cheer" on the butt of little girls pants, so when they walk by you glance at it out of the corner of your eye for a millisecond because you see a word. Then you realize you've just accidentally stared at a little girl's butt and you feel really dirty like a DC United supporter or maybe Bruce Arena.
The thought of the MetroStars changing their name has crossed my mind many a time. MetroStars sounds kinda amateurish, kinda like a USL team name. Like the SuperClub we are destined to be, we need something with class. Metro FC, Metro SC, Club Metro, etc. NO STARS! It makes them sound like a saturday morning cartoon starring Wayne Gretzky, Bo Jackson, and Michael Jordan. Good times. NY/NJ in the title or not, I love how foreigners always refer to the Metros as being the club from New York.
Heck, most MLS people do too. They must of all failed geography in school. Martin Tyler on World Soccer Daily today did refer to the game England played against Colombia as being in New Jersey. Well done by him.
The only other option is Metros, because Metro is wrong. You have to have a team name that plural since there's more then one player. None of these make sense: the Met, the Yankee, the Ranger, the Devil, the Giant, the Jet, etc.
