*I did a couple of searches on BS and Didn't turn up anything so I hope I'm not duplicating a thread.

Saw 90 minute soccer advetized on FSW this weekend. Looks like it may have potential.

Looks like Soccer America has some competition now. I'm all for more choices as far as soccer mags go, but I wonder if the US market can support more than one U.S. oriented soccer mag?

What's pretty interesting is that they're a FSW media partner, maybe FSW will use the mag to get some more exposure.

Can't wait till I get the free trial issue to check it out. Also, looks like they have a some soccer news on the website itself.

BTW- anyone know how the price of subscription for 90 minute soccer compares to Soccer America? 90 Minute Soccer is $40 fo 12 issues.

Personally I think it's an all around better magazine.

It's a bit glossier than SA and covers a bit more of the the lower divisions and college games.

    Never seen it.

Then again, the Barnes and Noble here does not even carry Soccer America.

I've gotten their free issue. It's very nice.

That said, I wouldn't pay a dime for it as it is. This may sound nitpicky, but it costs far too much for essentially a bunch of feature articles. It's something like $40/year for a monthly magazine, which is far, far too high.

I used to work for the editors of the mag, it's a great mag. Probably the best of all the mags out in the states right now. I'm not comparing to any zines so don't get all over me about the ECG and whatever, which are great publications as well, i'm comparing it to Soccer America and Soccer Digest. It's going to be in Barnes & NObles i think this coming month, so you'll be able to find it, Before i left working there we were getting it into local soccer stores as well. Well that's all i have to say, i hope they stick around, it's a classy mag with great writers.
    cheers

As a subscriber to both the mags mentioned here, I guess I'm as qualified as any to comment on them.

They are both very different mags. 90 mins is a cool glossy professional mag. Lots of big pictures and articles on profesional game in the US.

ECG is a fanzine. Written by fans, for fans. I actually spend more time on each issue of ECG than I do with 90 mins.

Either way, a subscription to one or the other will only help the coverage of the sport in this country so give them a try.

The Website is very good. The Mag is nice looking but isn't all that clever on what is inside it. Some good features, but then someone goes off on talking about how MLS should be replaced by the NASL again. But I do like the website news side of 90 minutes. ECG is very entertaining indeed, no reason you shouldn't have that. Socccer America is established, but getting a bit stagnant maybe.

    here is my problem.

Soccer America- last year when I was looking for soccer mags, it didnt cover the USL enough.

90 minutes- Too expensive and not enough issues.

    ESG- does this cover USL?

I think its gonna be Soccer America in the end though.

They've done a bit of tinkering the last couple of issues. SA seems to be back on the upswing.

Not sure about the ESG, but assuming you meant the ECG... we cover whatever we get material for...

There's not a dedicated USL regular contributor. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Over the last six months I've slowly been making some A-League and USL acquaintances which I hope to convert into some interviews/articles through the summer, but nothing has been firmed up at this time.

We're more or less a "fanzine gone legit". We don't really fit well into either category. Since our origins were as a Wizards fanzine, we've always been more focussed on MLS and the US National teams. The placement of a WUSA team in my backyard two years ago has added material on that front.

The quality of MLS soccer was far, far too low for the pricy $25.00 ticket and $10.00 parking at the Swamp, but we continued to support the game, and still do.

You, think twice, '90:00 Minute' may be far, far too pricy for you, but if you leave your usually sound judgement in the trunk of your car this one time, you'll find this magazine, if you allow it to survive very very pleasant to read.

BTW - you can buy SDSD stock for pennies, perhaps some day ir will be woth quarters....

Which is an argument I use when folks balk at the cost of my periodical. My problem is that I have no "economy of scale" whatsoever.

Everyone involved in making top flight professional soccer succeed in this country is likely making sacrifices. Whether they're paying too much for tickets, or accepting a much lower paying job than they could get in college or other pro sports, or by playing another sport or soccer in another country. We're all in it together.

Like I explained to someone else. "wire service style" material (even "fan" written) doesn't fit contextually in a magazine like the ECG. I wish them luck, though.

Well, it could have something to do with your team ;)

    Just kidding..

Believe me, I'll support just about anything American soccer related, but at this point, 90:00 is too expensive for my budget. I read the trial issue and honestly, I didn't get anything I wouldn't get online or from other sources. I prefer hard news over features, and most monthly magazines have more of the latter and very little of the former.

And that's where Magazines are headed. The question becomes - are the features fluff, or do the offer something different.

It's a struggle. The "news" is shifting to TV and the internet.

I agree. That's why I've begged Soccer America to take a check for $25 per year for their E-mail newsletters. They haven't listened yet.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not so forgive me if you already know this. Soccer America does charge for the email news letters. The daily e-letter is $59/year, MLS confidential is $29.95/year and the women's insider is $29.95/year. You can get all three for $89.95/year. If you subscribe to the magazine you get them all for free. I'm guessing you're in the same boat as I am because even though I no longer subscribe to Soccer America I still get the news letters for free.
