DC United's defender of the year for 2010*

*when they finished last overall with a GD of -26, and 47 goals allowed in 30 matches.

He seems to have had an injury but the main reason he lost his spot at DC was their acquisition of Robbie Russell.

We definitely needed some defensive depth so it's a good move in my opinion. Hopefully he is past the injury issue.

Anybody wonder if this presages the absence of Beita for WC qualifiers (either for USA or Iran?) That thought just sort of popped into my head while I was reading this thread...

right back depth, we needed it. im not scoffing at it this is a good pickup, was wondering why we didnt do it sooner. behind beita we had absolutely no one, and now we have insurance.

robert jonas says we needed to free up a roster spot to make room, ampai's pending departure to thailand has freed up that spot. not sure if this is correct though as i thought we had 28 signed but with jed i count 31 including amapi and a team can only carry 30 i believe so what rj says seems spot on; http://www.sjearthquakes.com/players

based on this if we are going to get any players during the transfer window we'll have to drop or trade someone...

I think Zayner has played some LB and even some CB for DC too.

He is better out wide. He is a great player when not hurt.... He was going to be our Namoff replacement... before all that happened with his body. :(

He has great touch, control, and passing. What more could you guys ask for?

No, the team can put Ward or Gjertsen (or even Garza) on the Injured List and that frees up a roster spot. I'm surprised they haven't done so already (or maybe they have and it just hasn't been reported). A player gets put on the Injured list and he has to sit out for at least 6 matches:

Get his feet wet in Open Cup. Let's see if he is ready to go against MLS competition. Beita has looked tired lately. His crosses have not had the quality he showed earlier in the season. Maybe giving him a night off on occasion would recharge his batteries. Also, I would be interested to see Beita played in midfield sometimes. He's done that in the past when we've been behind and pushing for goals. Play Zed behind him and it could be an exciting combination.

i agree completely with throwing him into the US open fray, no questions about it. Poor beita needs a break.

I think this is more about adding depth. We don't really have a backup for Beita, excepting Garza, and Garza is hurt, so we absolutely needed another defender.(Ring can play right back too.)

Zayner is a guy we've trialed, so we know what he brings. These sorts of moves from JD and Frank have a pretty good track record of panning out. I don't need for Zayner to be great, I just need for him to be competent when called upon.

    Good move by our leadership.

    GOOOOO QUAAAAAAAKES!!!!!!

Agree on Beita's play of late dropping off, but the concerning thing is that even after a long rest he still didn't look that good Wednesday against Colorado. Hoping to see a good match from him tomorrow. As for playing him in midfield, sorry, I don't see that. With all of the other options the Quakes have in midfield, I can't see Beita being a better choice. He's not that comfortable on the ball in tight spaces which would cause him problems. He's good enough offensively to be a very good overlapping right back, but he's not good enough to be ahead of Chavez, Salinas, Dawkins, Garza or even Baca at outside mid.

I just want to see him playing right back like he was earlier in the season again.
