There has been a new proposal for a 85,000 seat stadium on the West Side, looks really good. And I thought it would be great if we could get some international soccer matches in there. Also what are the possibilities of an expansion NY MLS team playing there? I think with a prime location, with so much access to public transport and millions of people in NYC, it would easily draw 30,000 a game.

A rental deal with an NFL team is exactly what MLS is trying to stay away from. And also the too large venue situation.
I'm sure it would be great for big international matches but not for an MLS franchise. The cost to use such a stadium each game would be just too high.
In the long run, a SSS is the only way to go, In my opinion.
Look what one of Europe's biggest teams is doing.

The article mentioned, I believe, that the stadium will be in Midtown. Do you have an idea of what cross-street the proposed location is? (i.e. 32nd St, etc).

vw, you hit it almost on the mark. The railyards near the River Hudson the article mentions are in the mid-30's. So, if you stood on the roof of this new stadium, you could maybe see Giants stadium with the naked eye. Unless the Metros are playing in Harrison, NJ, methinks this is too close to put a second NY team. If the Metros do move south, then i'm in favor of a second NY team, but it should be a real NYC team, marketed at the HUGE foreign population out in BK & QN (1/2 million russians, plus huge # of Chinese, Korean, Ecuadorian, Jamaican, etc...) maybe a SSS next to the Cyclones stadium?

It is actually THE OPPOSITE. One of the reasons of putting the stadium in Harrison is for easy access from NYC. If the Metros move to Harrison it will actually be CLOSER in terms of accessability than Giants Stadium.

Not to dismiss your point, but why can't they do that NOW with the HUGE population of immigrants in NJ? I doubt it will be any different than the Metros are now. They will be supported the same because nothing will change. Its still the same stupid league with the same stupid rules, just two rivers closer.

Exactly. Harrison would actually be more accessible for New Yorkers (including Qns, Bx, Bk) than most locations in the outer boroughs.
Well that, and absolutely no chance of getting revenue from parking. And considering the cost of running a stadium in midtown, it's conceivable that renting the joint for MLS will be even more painful than at Giants Stadium.

BTW You can read more about the site at the NYC 2012 page.

Let's bring the Metros to Queens!

    PATH system map

    1. Take the LIRR to Penn Station.
    2. Walk to the PATH stop at 33rd and 6th.
    3. Stick $1.50 into the gate.
    4. Get on a Newark-bound train.
    5. Get off at Harrison.

I assume it would be a little less than an hour to get from Nassau Co. to Penn Station. And it's about 30 minutes from Manhattan to Harrison, so little more than 90 minutes including changing trains?

It's high time someone build a huge stadium in Manhattan, so long as it's a soccer friendly playing pitch so the MLS bring back the friggin Cosmos once and for all to play there. That'll give more bridge and tunnel trash like myself even more excuse to spend time and money in Manhattan. Yipp-pee!!!!!!!

Imagine a 30, 000 football/soccer stadium in Flushing Meadow Park Queens?

Huge crowds..... guaranteed....... I think? I hope? I'm sure of it!

even though its easier for me to drive to queens, I would rather hop the train or bus to the wast side stadium, and hit the city after the game. that way I dont have to worry about my car. and I have more fun

At one point there was talk(just talk) about the proposed "NYC Expansion Team" for MLS. One of the ideas bandied about was to put that team at Aqueduct Racetrack. The racetrack would be converted to a SSS and has it's own subway station (the A train).

However, the option on the rights to a NYC team have expired and since the Metros are committed to Harrison, it looks like Aqueduct will remain empty for the forseeable future.

What is up with Harrison? Is it a done deal? What are we waiting for?

There was a lull like this for G fans, so we feel your pain.

I am going to guess the west side along ther river and henry hudson pkwy. There is a convnetion center there and some unused space b/w port authority aread and lower west side. I oftn thought this (or across the river in J. city for a cheaper alternative) would be a great idea for commuting reasons. Both are accessable by train, boat, subway, and have parking....

except there are quite a few people who actually live down there and evidently have a lot of pull with the urban planning zone / commision thingy....

you could have fooled me. I used to live on 43rd b/w 10-11th and south of me looked like mainly like a prime spot to build something. I really didnt see too many apartments (Or I missed them)....

This was a few years ago in this location so maybe it has changed..

I was thinking the same thing. The far west side usually resembles a ghost town.
