And discuss, four dollars and a half eaten tray of nachos to the first person that throws out the SMU tie...
name ≠ John Wagner = promising start The guy's resume makes him look like he's a Garber protege. Could definitely be worse. Anything that gives us an FCD-centered voice to fight for resources with the bean counters has to be a step in the right direction. Will it be followed by 5 or six subsequent steps in the wrong one? Could be, but I'm cautiosly optimistic.
Nah, we'd have the biggest party on Earth if that hack got let go. He's like Karl Rove...he's somewhere in the shadows, plotting the end of the world.
For a while, I think Wagner was directly in charge of FCD and the Crew. He's not in charge of the Crew anymore, and I don't think he was ever meant to be in charge of FCD long term. It's more like he represents the Hunts over everything HSG has. I'd bet he's either been kicked back upstairs or kicked himself back upstairs. I'm sure they all realized Wagner's way wasn't working. The franchise has been slowly rotting for years, and now either the Hunts or MLS, or maybe even Wagner himself, decided it was time for a change. FCD have done several unprecedented things this summer, from bringing in Inter to advertising on radio and TV, and have managed to actually keep or increase attendance in the heat of summer. It will be interesting to see what Quinn does about a jersey sponsor, DPs, advertising and sales, operations at PHP, etc.
Yeah, considering his extensive background in marketing, it would be great to get a jersey sponsor. I still say American Airlines would be perfect - Our colors are red, white, and blue, and they're AMERICAN Airlines, and they're in Dallas. If only the airline industry wasn't in dire straights...
Almost makes me wonder if MLS had finally seen enough re: marketing, attendance, etc in Dallas, and they decided to step in and “recommend” one of their top marketing guys – who just happens to have SMU/Texas roots – to HSG.
Probably. I find it hard to believe that this is a step up for him, probably more of a lateral move. Before you say President of a team is higher than SUM, I would say SUM makes a lot more money than FCD and plays a much bigger role in the American soccer scene than most people would realize. To be honest, I don't really care about yet another SMU link, as long as it's on the business side, their business school is solid. What's more of interest to me is what exactly his role gets to be. Is he being brought in to make the top level decisions, including budgets and convincing HSG to put money behind this team? Or is he being brought in to be yet another yes man for the Hunts, who is hamstrung by their inability to get our of their own way. As has been discussed many times on here, Wagner wasn't a soccer guy, he was guy who knew how to keep this club afloat while spending pennies.
I agree. MLS owners have parts in each others's teams. The other owner's could not have been happy at what was happening here the last few years.
Who do I talk to about someone being recommended to work for my team? Good luck, guys, hope this works out for you.
Hunt said the search for a president didn't begin in earnest until after Barry Gorman was hired as technical director on April 20.
Its probably a very good hire for FCD. I say probably because who knows how tight the Hunts will keep the rigns on him. He sounds eminently qualified to lead us out of this quagmire of our own creation. He may not be thrilled about moving from NYC to Frisco and as others have said, no doubt MLS asked him to take one for the team and have one of their best people take over one of the worst / underperfoming companies.
