I was watching the Valencia v Rangers Champions League game today, and the positioning of the German referee just seemed so strange. @ 32-34' and again at 42', play is deep on the SAR side, and referee is standing about 10 yards from touch at the 18 with his BACK to the AR. What the heck is he doing I thought, and then camera brings the 5th Official on the far post into view. I guess he had play between he and the 5th, but still it looked strange.

I think players are still getting used to it as well. A couple of times the referee gets in the way. I think due to players just not used to a referee standing in these passing lanes.

Is there a CL positioning memo someone has access to adjusted to this?

There was a diagram which I can't find right now.. It basically showed the referee cutting towards the top of the penalty arc and forming a triangle between him, the AR, and AAR.
