I disagree that they all suck. The word "suck" does not contain enough suck to adequately describe the suck factor of these sucky ideas.

The one that looks like a tic-tac-toe board is the worst.

    REBUILD THE ************ING TOWERS

    You mean this one ?.

God, that's f_cking awful. And this one is a glorified fig tree.

I think the Foster and partners one is my favourite.

Maybe these aren't to everyone's liking but FWIW I preferred the Foster one too.
Not simply due to nationality but because the design is for a tower that's bigger than before.

I'm part ashamed to say this but the first thing that went through my head when I heard about the attacks of 11/9 was annoyance that they'd done it to the WTC - which turned into despair when they collapsed.

I want a fvcking massive building - I've always had a fascination for the large skyscrapers or even structures. It's one of the few occasions where I want to encourage the US' bravado - but I'd love for them to proverbially give them the finger by constructing an absolutely immense building. More for the sake of getting a spectacular construction than the symbolism really.

Stoking your ego by building a really tall tower is just juvenile and obnoxious. The last thing we need to prove our power is to build the world's tallest building. The Petronas Twin Towers did nothing to make Malaysia any more of an impressive nation (it probably hurt things as Kuala Lumpur is now very overbuilt and has lots of empty stores and offices).

The new construction should fit in with the existing skyline and be an economical source of office space.

Of the new 7 designs, the only one I can stomach is the THINK Team's one with the 3 pretty but too skinny and tall towers and the nice green area.

Oh gee thanks for putting me in my place.

That's why I said I like and admire large buildings and find them magnificent - almost regardless of beauty.
The 'flicking the bird to the rest of the world' reference wasn't that straight forward. Simply that that would probably the rationale behind building such an immense structure - which is actually what I want, not the obnoxiousness of it.
I don't care whether Malaysia is a better nation because of the Petronas Towers - to me it's a mighty fine building - end of story.

My arguments were always shallow, I never tried to make them seem otherwise.

I agree, we should't build the world's tallest building. We should build the world's tallest buildings. They should look just like the old ones, except they should be the tallest buildings in the world.

The original World Trade Center was a ************ing architectural disaster, and all New Yorkers hated it when it was built.

If we don't build the exact replicas of the Twin Towers, or bigger, the terrorists will win.

Edit: I wish people would remember that we're rebuilding the WTC to help the economy get back up in Lower Manhattan, not for the benefit of terrorists or jingoistic high school kids.
I doubt Osama is thinking right now "Gee golly, I hope they don't build the towers back to their original size. Then all my hard work would go to waste!"

Never mind that a poll taken when the old designs came out showed a vast majority of New Yorkers wanted the towers re-built.

Maybe not, but it would be a huge morale blow to the lemmings that follow him.

Which would make it 10 times the target that the old one was.

The prime requirement for a building is that it provide more revenue (from office and retail space) than it takes to build (manpower, energy, material, clogging city streets, so on) or maintain (including security). Anything else is communism or wanton squandering of resources, whichever one makes you angrier.

So. Just equip the new towers with an anti-aircraft defense system.

It isn't easy to bring down an airliner. Even if you do it will land somewhere in NYC.

Besides, it isn't easy to take over aircraft anymore. They will use other means.

Given the US' increased 'defence' spending and the re-started 'star-wars' programme, I'd have said that wanton squandering of resources was quite high on the list of priorities. Why not have a large building to show for your efforts?

    Link?

Are we talking about re-building exact replicas or new towers to take their place?
Not that this is at all relevant - the primary purpose of the rebuild WTC is to revitalize the economy in an area of the city that was hurting even before 9/11 - the memorial is an integral, but secondary part.
Given that, making them really really tall for really really tall's sake is pure idiocy for a city in a budget crisis and has more pressing issue than building a middle finger pointed in the general direction of Osama's hiding place.
Yes. They're nervously sitting by their camel-operated television sets, hoping against hope, that the design with the biggest baddest towers doesn't get picked. Because, you know, if they're even an inch short, they terrorists will win.

    http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/WABC_100301_rebuildpoll.html

The poll is a lot older than I had remembered it being, but it still shows the majority of New Yorkers want the towers rebuilt.

Exact replicas in terms of external appearance, with the exception that the new ones should be taller.

But rebuilding the towers will also provide an important boost to American national pride and New York civic pride.

Did you even bother to read the articles?
The poll asked New Yorkers whether they wanted the World Trade Center rebuilt, not the Twin Towers.

I was asking about the opinons of the New Yorkers in the above poll, not you. We already know you want the biggest baddest phallic symbol on earth because with anything less, the terrorists will win.

Getting the WTC rebuilt would be a morale boost on its own. Sure, something as big as the old Twin Towers might be nice, but I'd feel much prouder about a tastefully designed memorial and a sensible office complex that doesn't end up becoming a white elephant that cripples the city's economy because it was built too large for its own good.

Those have got to be the most hideous proposal ideas ever. If I lived in NYC and they built any of those monstrosities, I would move. The only tolerable one is this one (and even it is ludicrous):

I was reading a bit more, and it seems the problem is that there are two competing requirements that the city put forth:

There has to be a lot of open space
There has to be a lot of office space

The only way to do this is to build tall and skinny buildings.

Maybe they could dig really deep tunnels and take the buildings underground.
