Funny, I thought it lost any cool factor after the first month or two. Isn't it already kind of old hat?

That said, stoked about the price. Been using a ************ ass free phone since my iPhone was stolen last fall, was gonna wait for the 3g version to be out, and snag an old one at a lower price, but looks like I can get a shiny new one now... :D

Didn't the first iPhone go for something around $600? Has it been more than a year since that came out?

yes ... $600, but they quickly knocked $200 off the price and pissed people off.

it's the one-year anniversary ... it was released last june or july.

By the way, since I've already been with Cingular/ATT, is that why I haven't understood why most people find something to complain about with the rate plans? I'd always be asked "yeah, but isn't it about $100/mo on your bill?" and, maybe it was because nothing ever changed on the bill, it was the usual $50 or so that I always paid, it was like, no, no it really isn't as mind blowingly expensive on a monthly basis as you seem to think...

Devil's in the details... the new 3G phone will be much more expensive and Apple plans to require registration with carrier/plan before buyers can leave store.... found this table on Gizmodo.com, about the true costs... 5 dollars for 200 text messages? Wow!

My Generation 1 iphone's value on ebay may be rising...

Although I'm not sure I want to pay more for the plan every month. It's no longer such a no brainer for me to upgrade.

Aren't there limits on how many discounts he can use per year? And it's not the price of the phone that has me balking.

for the employee, it's like 25% off the retail price for one ipod, one iphone, one imac, etc for him/herself per year. there's a friends-and-family discount, 10 or 15% off i believe, and might be limited to 3 total items.

my bro works for apple also, and has hooked me up with a replacement ipod, as well as getting my nephew a nano. he's told me the discount details, but they're pretty foggy to me right now.

or then there's THIS. don't know the accuracy though.

    From the first link:
It also seems that the iPhone 3G will need to be activated at an Apple Store of AT&T store, there will be no online ordering, and there may be financial penalties imposed on those who do not activate their iPhones within 30 days.

So, the way I see it, if you buy it at an Apple Store, you can activate it right then and there, and not worry about 30 days.

I don't get what you're saying .... you can activate it at AT&T and not worry about the 30 days either ....

and it's not that there's financial penalties if you don't activate them ... you can't buy it if you don't activate it in the store. since AT&T is subsidizing the price, they don't want you unlocking it and selling it online. They make their money on subscribers.
From what I read (apologies if I have it wrong) ... if you try to cancel in 30 days you have to return the phone. After 30 days, you have to pay $200 cancellation fee (which is what AT&T subsidized).

Recent iPhone buyers may get a free 3G

Bought an iPhone after May 27? AT&T's got you covered

Did you recently buy an iPhone only to discover a new version was about to be released? Fear not, AT&T's got you covered. Gizmodo and Crunchgearconfirmed a few things that weren't mentioned at Monday's keynote. Glenn Lurie from AT&T Mobility (via Crunchgear) says that if you bought an iPhone after May 27, 2008, you're eligible for an iPhone 3G upgrade when it goes on sale July 11 at no additional charge (except maybe that $10 increase in your data plan).

Details on 3G release and dates from Jobs...

Details emerge of iPhone 3G international launch
    By Prince McLean
Published: 10:45 AM EST, Thursday, June 26, 2008
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/26/details_emerge_of_iphone_3g_international_launch.html
Steve Jobs announced at WWDC that the new iPhone 3G would launch simultaneously in 22 countries on July 11 and expand to at least 70 countries by the end of 2008. What wasn't revealed was the unit and service pricing details for mobile carriers outside of AT&T in the US. Jobs also didn't brag up the hardball plan deals he forced upon carriers or his efforts to recreate a spectacular launch event internationally.

iPhone roll call: who's buying one on July 11?

I'm in for one. I went to AT&T today and got a credit check done, got my info into the computer, etc. I read that if you're not an AT&T customer that you should do that in advance as it will save time when you go to buy it.

Anyway, very excited. 16GB in black, please.

I'm a V.1 owner and considering upgrading since I think the discount applies to us. But $15 more per month is a little tough to swallow.

I wonder how prevalent 3G is?

Does the GPS give turn by turn audio?

Not July 11th, but soon after. A year after my first one (a 4gb!) and 8 months after that was stolen. :(

The new $199 price makes the sting of the theft a lot easier to bare...

I'm going to guess it might be a program you can buy from Itunes when the store launches.

Can anybody help me out here... the iPhone has become available in Ireland under the O2 provider, so it will run in that regard (as I think there are some strange licensing exclusivity laws about it?)... but the one thing I just need to check is if anybody knows if a US-bought (and thus FAR cheaper) iPhone should work fine in Ireland once I get the provider nonsense sorted out? I can't see why not, but it's not really something I want to take a risk on only to be disappointed.

I'd love to get an iPhone if it worked on T-Mobile.

Hopefully that will happen some day.
