Apparently the Metros have their eye on Peruvian Goalie Juan "Chiquito" Flores. Flores is the starting goalkeeper for popular Peruvian club Universitario de Deportes. Flores himself in an interview for Peruvian sportspaper "El Bocon" states that the metrostars have an eye on him and if he continues to perform well the possibility of him coming to the tristate area is favorable. From what i recall Flores' wife and kids live in Jersey and he took time off near the end of last season to come to the states to spend time with his family and make a decision regarding his future given he was considering retiring from the game, at a young age mind you. From what I've seen of this guy he has made a tremendous amount of improvement as of late. If you had asked me what i thought of him a little over a year ago i would tell you he was no good and a tremendous trouble maker. This was a guy who got kicked off the national team at one point during 2002 WC qualifiers for indiscipline and has cause a bunch of brawls during league games. My opinion today is that he's pulled off a total 180 since he came to the states to weigh his options. I havent heard of the guy getting involved in any sort of controversy and his game has improved inmensely. It definitely seems as if he got his priorities straight. And a move to MLS can definitely help the kid. He is dying to be close to his wife and kids and he is talented enough to play in the league. Now the question is, are the metros really eyeying him? If they are it would create a pretty cool competition with Walker for starting Goalkeeper. By the way does anyone know who the metros backup goalie is? Does the team need another goalie? Anway, my apologies for making this so long. Any opinions?

If he'll get his green card, commit to weekly anger management classes, work for P-40 wages, and be willing to sit the bench behind likely Best XI candidate Walker, then sure, we'll take a look at him. Anything less and we pass.

I'm the Metros second keeper. But Walker's so good, I never have to leave Pennsylvania.

This guy is not nearly as good as Walker. He might as well just stay home or apply for a landscaping job.

i dont think any one of us feels it necessary to bring in somebody to seriously compete for Jonny's job...but it occurred to me that if this interest in Flores is real, does Bob and the MFO feel Walker could be leaving for greener pastures?...i can't really think of any other reason why they'd bring Flores in, unless they feel Wells just isnt ready to fill in when needed despite his strong showing in the preseason...pretty interesting development..

Well I honestly do not believe that Flores would be able to take the starting spot away from Walker.....But a good point has been made......Is MFO looking ahead to the possiblity of Walker leaving in the near future......I personally think Jonny is the best keeper in MLS and you gotta believe there are some Euro teams eyeing him.....Maybe MLS is looking at Flores as a possibility for the future.....Better to be safe than sorry......And you also have to be ready for an unexpected injury or something, (Knock on wood that doesnt happen).

Maybe they are planning a back-up plan for when Jonny gets Nat team call ups?
