I got into soccer about 2 years or so ago and never really liked united. But after seeing them in Seattle I started to be a little interested, but i didn't want to be a "glory hunter". Now, with Howard playing for them, I finnally have taken a real interest in how they do. The only thing that is stopping me from liking them is the fact that everyone seems to assume all Americans who like united are "glory hunters". Does being American automatically classify me as a "glory hunter" now.
Who cares what other people think. If you like United, then support them. Just be a true supporter, through thick and thin.
Be a true fan, following them through the good times and the bad. Try to learn a lot about the team, and about soccer in general, and no one will really be able to call you a glory hunter. United have a fascinating history, and they play the best soccer in the world. You won't regret becoming a fan. Welcome to BigSoccer and the Manchester United board.
As long as the primary team that you support is your local side, you will be allright. Seattle Sunders ehh?
Thanks for the responses! Are there any good sites, besides the official one, for stuff like history and other things i wouldn't see every where?
I too followed Tim Howard to United... allthough I have always supported them from afar... It's a lot easier with Fox Sports World. That 5-3 Barnburner against Madrid was the most exciting match I've ever seen... Except for my old highschools 1-0 semi final loss in the State Championship tournament....(but of course I played on that team.)
Uh you failed to mention he needs to develop an irrational hatred for CITEH (i don't care how one sided it is now) and Liverpool. For most United supporters its in that order but for me its the other way around.
Personally my irrational hatred is directed at Arsenal first and foremost. I guess my feelings for CITEH and Liverpool can best be described as pity.
There is a wealth of information out there on this team. Just type in "Manchester United" and history, or players, or matches, or something like that into Google. Also, there are several good books and DVDs worth picking up, if you do a search at Amazon.co.uk. For starters, try: www.manutdzone.com www.redcafe.net (another web forum)
For me, its more pity towards City (it rhymes!), and just laughing at Liverpool. Basically laughing at the fact that their fans still think they are the biggest team in England, and that glory is almost here. They can't seem to acknowledge that even if they do qualify for the CL, they would be minnows in that ocean. And that they are at least three years away from mounting a serious challenge to the Premiership trophy. With Arsenal, its more like being irritated at them. They are a great team, no doubt, and our chief rivals for the league this year. They are a team that is worth throwing insults at (that's a compliment, Gunner fans).
We'll take them anyway we can get them (compliments) from a United supporter. If you had to lose wouldn't you rather it be Arsenal than . . . God help us all, Chelsea but seriously 1. the Stoke chip off Bartez's head saved your season
Welcome! Welcome Zeller, My story is very similar when it comes to why I now support Man Utd. I was a Soccer Fan for a long time, but I never had a team in Europe that I felt attached to. I watched games as a neutral spectator just for the love of the game. But then, when Man United signed Tim Howard, I was very excited and then finally when they came here to the States on the Summer tour last year and watching the way they played on US soil, it confirmed who I was going to support from then on. It's funny how different one feels about a foreign team once they start playing on your country's soil, especially when they play in MLS venues. You right away notice how far more advanced they are and how far MLS has to go, but at least we're attempting to close that gap. Also, a friend of mine became a diehard Man Utd. supporter the same time I did after Howard signed with them & when they came here last Summer.
Come now, being called a "Glory Hunter" is going to bother you how much? Really. Oh, and welcome to BigSoccer.
Anyone calling you a Glory Hunter is merely conceding that Utd is a glorious club. Smile and thank him
I like http://www.redissue.co.uk/ A good site for all things united and a great message board. Some humor along with info. Just be warned that some posters have negative feeling about fans not from the manchester area, but don't let it bother ya. I never played or watched soccer until the 94' WC when i really took a liking to Keane and Irwin and thus became a UNITED fan.
