I'm not sure as to the relevance to MLS, but here goes: These 2 guys wrapped in Real Madrid shawls are watching Real play Barcelona. This other guy says something like "How can I hang around here with these guys around?" The 2 guys are screaming things at the TV and then a penalty is called in Madrid's favor. They start yelling penalty and Figo goes to take. The 3rd guy says that "Figo is a trator" and hits the TV. At the end it says something like "What would we do without sports; ESPN." The entire commercial was in Spanish, but it had English subtitles. I noticed Nike's commercial that involved soccer. Maybe Nike and ESPN are going to raise the soccer awareness going into the MLS season. Who knows?
nah i doubt it.i went to the nike store in ny.they had some soccer stuff but when u wanted to buy anything soccer related it was in this tiny corner of the store.
Yesterday on Around The Horn, they talked about the other Nike commercial with the streaker. Max Kellerman said something about ESPN showing a soccer commercial despite the networks failed attempts at promoting the sport in this country. Funny, I can't ever remember ESPN actually doing anything to increase interest in the sport. They all said they like it except T.J. Simers who said it shouldn't be shown where little girls and other kids could see it. Bob Ryan from the Boston Globe actually used pitch in place of field and commented about how funny the British announcer was. As far as I can tell he is a real classy guy, but Max Kellerman is an idiot who got hit too many times when he boxed. -VON
Funny stuff The Nike ad with the streaker running around the soccer pitch was all over the networks this weekend during the NFL playoffs and my wife fell out of her chair laughing. When it first starts, before the naked guy comes on, the game looks all rather staid and boring, so I was worried that it was going to be another ESPN-soccer-bashing effort...BUT NO, it's really quite entertaining. Like they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity. And during an NFL Championship game, being watched by 30-40 million people. Not bad. People, we have a mole at Nike.
Re: Funny stuff Word is it will be shown during the Superbowl too. So, we've got the Nike ad, this ESPN ad, the Budweiser ad. It is nice to see soccer shown in a favorable light in so many places. These commercials probably got green-lighted just after the WC and we are just now seeing them.
First off, Max Kellerman is an idiot who just likes to hear himself talk. If he actually said it was a soccer commercial then he is even more of an idiot who didn't even get the commercial. It was a running shoe commercial in a soccer setting. Lots of commercials use odd settings for the product they are shilling and nothing is made of it. And I'd say you're right on here.
Regal Cinema & Uncle Phil I saw this very commercial in Spanish (w/ english subtitles) at my local Regal Cinema about 2 months ago. Good commercial. Regal Cinema as you probalby all know has ties to Uncle Phil. Here are two good articles: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/02_16/b3779088.htm http://dallas.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/2001/10/08/daily46.html enjoy BTW there was already a thread covering this topic awhile back.
Companies use soccer in sports setting commercials because the ads translate better to other markets. Make one ad. Dub it in several languages. Save money and get your message across to a broad spectrum.
kellerman is a dips.h.i.t. i dont think hes ever boxed has he. when is his show going to be cancelled, pti is pretty good but around the horn is just imitation.
