Did anyone see the NE v. Col game yesterday?

Can anyone give me a good reason why Matt Reis was still in the game after the foul on Martino in the PA? I just cannot fathom why he did not get a red card for that.

Do you honestly think that Doug Warren would save 2 penalty kicks in that game? I'm sorry, but that result just doesn't seem right to me.

What result are we talking about? That it was 1-0? I only watched part of the match, so I didn't see your questioned play, but I did see where the referee missed a clear handling in the area on Columbus, so it looks like it all evens out :).

I didn't think he'd get a red for the play but I certainly couldn't fathom the fact that Prus didn't at least give him a yellow card for that foul. He denied Martino an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, a PK was justly awarded but a yellow card should have been as well.

As a side note: If a defender made the same play in the box by taking out Martino with the GK somehow out of position and an empty goal in front of him it would have been a red card without question for the defender, right? It baffles me why the GK is held in a different regard.

I actually went to the game and had 2nd row seats and well the reffing wasn't that great. But mostly the Crew played like total ******************. Missing 2 PKs, then we get an empty netter opportunity from about 30 yards out and the kick is low and soft. ughhh.and Why didn't Buddle start the game? Why did he not take the 2nd PK??? Revolution's keeper guesses the corner and dives. so why didnt crew shoot down the middle? Also, both PKs were hit with the power of an average JV player in a crappy state. What can I say? Crew has managed to choak every season, especially in the playoffs. And this year we had a championship quality team...

I'm still holding firm that there was a defender in close enough contact for it not to be DOGSO.

might be the same reason why he did not give a PK to the Revs for the Handball in the PA just a few minutes later.....reason being he sucks as a ref! As for a defender being near by, Avery john was standing just a few feet away, actually behind Reis

Actually, there should/could have been handling in the area on Hejduk -- but it could easily be argued that he was attempting to get his chest to the ball, not his arm -- hence, not deliberate handling. But call it a PK if you want.

There also should/could have been another PK for Columbus when Reis took down Marshall. The replay showed that Reis did not get to the ball. The first contact was Reis' knee crunching Marshall's ankle. Then Reis' attempt to play the ball wound up actually kicking Marshall's foot into the ball.

So those two missed PK's balance each other out. But my argument was that Reis should not even have been in the game any longer after the first PK.
I don't think so. John was trailing Martino and only got alongside when Martino went down.

It should not and does not matter if it's the GK or a defender. He completely missed the ball and took Martino down. If Martino doesn't go down, it's most likely an easy tap in. But we don't have to decide that it is going to be an easy tap in -- all we have to decide is that he going to have a CHANCE to tap it in. There is no way anyone who is objective could argue that he wouldn't have had a chance to tap that ball into the net. All the necessary ingredients are there for this to be an OGSO. Reis fouled him. Reis should have been gone.

As a side note, I am not a Columbus fan or a Revolution fan. But it really bothered me as a referee to not see this handled properly. We get taught in our advanced clinics that when we get to the higher levels, we have to have the balls to make the proper call. It seems to me that Prus failed in that respect in this situation.

Hundreds or thousands of soccer fans see this play on national TV and then when we do our local leagues, high school or college games and we have the exact same situation and we toss the offending GK, the coaches go nuts on us because WE'RE the ones not doing it right. I tossed a GK in a HS match earlier this fall and I get two coaches and two parents (one a referee) in my ear after the game. They are stating that "in all my years of soccer/coaching/refereeing, I have never seen a GK red carded in that situation." Then this happens in national TV and it just backs up their claims.
