I just created this fan site and I am still in the process of making it. It's not the greatest but I hope it gets the job done. Bookmark it and keep checking in. Whatever suggestions you have are appreciated. A lot of the site is incomplete and if someone wants to volunteer to write a history of the franchise or anything for that matter, that would be great. If anyone has any old pictures, like that one with all the original uniforms, send them to me so I can include them in the site.

    I saw it earlier.

I think one reason you blew out your limit was that you had WAY too many graphics in there.

It's a good first stab, just refine it and try to keep it as simple as possible.

Nice Site. It did have a lot of graphics that slowed the loading for me. It does look nice though.

I've always thought that the best websites have something unique to offer... Try looking through some of the other sites and seeing what other sites are missing. You might just need to compile something together that someone else hasn't.

I'm not sure if something is out there yet with a list of Hudsonisms but I think that would be cool to read through them once an a while. Plus, pretty much every interview you read will give you new material for a website.

    Keep up the good work.

Keeping up a fan website can be a lot of work. Good on you for starting one up.

I did this for a few years back in the day. I started with the idea that the site would be a collaborative effort sort of like the fanzine approach. Well, it was quite difficult to really keep a regular set of contributors. Eventually, the proliferation of the email lists and message boards steered people away from devoting time toward writing pieces for a fan site and, instead, posting them directly to the lists and boards. Plus, I'm basically lazy, so it was often a lonely site.

Here are the things that went over well:

Anything anti-metro. I had this running list of knicknames for the tards that garnered more attention from the Metro-bastard fans (mostly highly offensive, hate filled, putrid stuff) than DC fans...but it was fun. I put this midi in the background of the muppet theme song that seemed to strike a chord of sorts.

Key play animations. Every once in a while, I'd put together a crude animation of the key plays in big match. Basically, it was a series of simple *.gif combined in an animated gif. This went over pretty well. Key was to keep it simple. Could be an idea.

Satire. This was hit and miss, but every now and again, a satire piece would hit a chord and get some attention. Best to let others do this if you can, because it is quite hard to be a creative satirist and a web dude...too much pressure.

Ripping Off. When you are in need of material, don't be afraid to just blatantly rip off ideas from other web sites you like. For instance, the Pictures of Chairman Mao (POCM, RIP) site was a great source of inspiration. I never really bit anything of their directly, but they were a good place for inspiration. For instance, I never could get it finished, but I liked their graphic representation of Revolution results over time. Stats are fun, but their ability to really put it in graphic form was awesome.

International Mags. If you're going this route, it is almost required reading to scour 4-4-2, When Saturday Comes, and even our home grown fanzines (Emerald City Gazette).

Dyson. He's a great example of a fan who became a resource for other fans. I realize them is big shoes, but think of how he has been able to dream-big and deliver. For that matter, Unitedmania is a great fan site.

Dream Big. Why not. My goal, not realized, was to get an interview with Kevin Payne and get him drunk. Never even came close, but it would have been fun. I hear he had an incredible temper and would have been gold to get on tape. Mejido out smarted us all by a mile on that one anyway.

Mejido: genius gone awry. Don't follow his path. Obscenity has its place, but taste is a different matter.

    Good Luck,
    Tim

    Tim,

I remember the key play animations you set up. That was great.

OK I went through and got rid of the stuff that was unnecessary so you should have a problem logging on. I think it looks better now anyway. I added a MetroScum section and if you've ever been to metrofanatic.com you will recognize the heading for the section. As far as an original idea, I was thinking about the same thing after I saw http://www.graferspants.com/ which is a great site even though it is the MetroStars. http://www.mtbftr.com/ is another great site even though it too is for the Metros. We have some ground to cover to catch MetroScum.

Thank you. Also if anyone knows of any sites with really in-depth MLS history could you pass it along? I would like to write a thorough history of DC United and so any additional info, pictures, etc. you know of would be great.

Agreed! There is no need to needlessly disparage a group of people just so you can make fun of the Metroscum. I mean, if you were gay would you want to be associated in any way shape or form with the Metroscum... Talk about insulting!
