I was very strongly thinking about purchasing a new Crew jersey for my collection, until I came across a post saying there will be a new yellow strip for the 2003 season. Does anyone know any more details about this?

If there are suggestions telling me to wait, I will. If not, I'll try to see if Eurosport can send one with the Pepsi logo here.

    Thanks

rumor has it they're replacing the yellow one with a gold one. Hopefully they won't change the design, just the color slightly.

Well I hope they change the design...

For one, a collared shirt can be worn into many AF officer's clubs..whereas a non-collared one can't.

Secondly, I think gold is too bright, maybe an off-gold color (like Man Utd's reversible strip last year) would be fine.

Thirdly, I think the 3 stripes should run from the neck down the shoulders like on the old ('99, '00, '01, early '02) strips, not around the sleeves like are on the yellow strip now.

Finally, SELL LONG-SLEEVED SHIRTS!!! I live in Minot, North Dakota for Christ's sake!! And it wasn't too long ago that I lived in Ohio...it snows there too!!!

so you want something like this?

I don't know. That color doesn't jive too well with me.

I honestly don't see why people like collars. "It looks English" is a poor excuse. For me, the sweat runs off the back of my head, collecting on that collar. I want to take some damn scissors and chop that collar off.

Stripes. That was a good jersey in 1998 and '99, but they looked like racing stripes. So keep that in the archives where it belongs.

Long sleeved shirts. I agree, but would people actually buy long sleeved shirts? Heck, I just grab a yellow sweatshirt and throw that under my jersey.

    I like yellow.

I think gold fabric always looks cheezy, like some lounge lizard. Or the NFL.

And I think they could at least TRY a long sleeved shirt.

Also, they need to cool it a little. Two new shirts this year, another new one next year?

Can't there be a limit to their greed? How many times can you take the same few people to the well, anyway?

    Yellow = good.
    Gold = bad

Yeah, if they try it, at least they'd know. Release a small quantity and see how those go. If there's a demand, they could release more.

Yes. For the love of JesusAllahBuddah, please stop making new kits every year. Although they have generally gotten better every year...

All right then, the color does look a bit bright, and now that I look at it, it doesn't fit with the colors of the crest. However, a reversible jersey like that would be neat I think, and allow the fans in the stands to wear the color the team is wearing on the pitch most of the time. If you make it yellow on one side, white on the other, it would sell like hotcakes I think.

Collars have a more professional look I think. Just my opinion. And like I said, it allows it to be worn in a more "formal" setting (I obviously wouldn't wear it to a wedding, for instance, but I think you get the point).

Stripes are the trademark of adidas. And I think they look better down the sleeves, but again, just my opinion.

Finally, they've never sold long-sleeved jerseys before. Give it a chance to see if it works, for an extra $5 or $10. If they go through with playing games in March and November, it won't hurt anyone to have one. In the summertime, slide the sleeves up.

Maybe someone else has more info....

OK, no gold. I think we all agree.

Give long-sleeved shirts a try. I'd buy one. Maybe two for the soon-to-be wife. There's $120+ they might not get otherwise.

New kits are produced every 2 or 3 years it seems. The old black home shirts actually lasted 3 1/2 years, quite surprisingly. They were due for a new one. The current gold ones are in year 3 right now. They are due to be replaced, too. The third strips? Not only are they unnecessary, they're lame.

Oh, and did I mention? SELL A LONG-SLEEVED SHIRT!!!

I think with changing designs, it's done something like:

change yellow (new one in 1998)
change black (new one in 1999)
    off (2000)
New (current) yellow one in 2001
    New (current) black in 2002
...which means that the yellow one is out after this year :(

I don't know how often they change the third kit.

Though not really a crew fan myself, I think the crew yellow is distinctive. No gold, if I had any say in it.

The only brighter uniforms I've seen were the neon orange dutch uniforms I saw in a friendly.

I've seen the 2003 adidas catalog.

The shirts look pretty much the same for next year. Black and yellow. If I can find it, I'll post the exact descriptions.

    There are no long sleeves.

Men's Columbus Crew Replica Home Jersey ($65.00 retail)

Climalite outer jersey with integrated underjersey, mesh ventilation on chest & back, embroidered adidas brandmark, and applied 3-stripes. 100% polyester mesh. Colors : Black & sunshine.

No changes for the home jersey.

    However......

Men's Columbus Crew Replica Away jersey ($65.00 retail).

Climalite jersey with embroidered adidas brandmark and applied 3-stripes. 100% polyester. Available 11/25/02. Crew yellow & black.

This is a yellow jersey with black underneath the arms. There is a yellow collar and the 3-stripes running down the shoulders. There is a black band that starts from the end of the sleeve that comes horizontally across the front of the sleeve. The black band ends once the sleeve portion joins the chest of the jersey.

Not sure what "crew yellow" is, but, it looks less "sunnier" than the bright mustard yellow kits. Sort of a yellow with a tinge of orange, a darker yellow. This looks like it is based on the new "sportivo" uniform that adidas will be launching for next spring. DC will also have an away shirt on this style as will KC.

Go to your local soccer retailer and ask to see the 2003 soccer catalog.

I agree. I think the plan is to change a uniform every year, alternating home and away. Sometimes they'll let a uniform run 3 years, but the usual is 2. New home kit one year, new away kit the next.

I have seen nothing, but there were some threads in the MLS forum a while back, and I remember some people saying that the color change was minor, just that the yellow was the same yellow as the Crew have on their badge (crest, coat of arms, whatever you call it:D). I didn't mind the Gold ManU uniforms, but I prefer the current Yellow Crew uniforms much more. Those are sharp.

Now as for the all black uniforms ... being a DC United fan, I'm not keen on taking our look. Particularly when the Crew choose their black uniforms just to make United wear white.

IMHO, each club should pick 1 preferred uniform at the beginning of the season. Unless it conflicts with the other team's, you always wear that uniform. It helps brand the teams. Of course, the home team would always get preferrence in which uniforms to wear if there is a conflict.

    Got any pictures MrSangster?

Is the style similar to that of DC's current black kit? I'm not sure I understand the description.

I don't care, find a way to sell them. Players have been wearing them since day 1. San Jose's fan club somehow got them this year, and sold them, complete w/sponsor logos. Somehow it has to be able to be accomplished.

    Can't wait for the picture...
