Based on the post about Ammann looking for a college job, and Sandon's reply about NC State, I thought I'd start this thread to discuss possible Tarantini replacements at NCSU. In NC, there are several good candidates. John Tart at Charlotte, Dave Golan at Appalachian State, Darren Powell (assistant at UNCG), Ken Pollard and Mike Jacobs (assistants at Duke), Bobby Muuss (assistant at Wake). Any one of those guys who bring State back to respectability in the ACC. Other names?
Why not keep it in the family? Tab Ramos, Henry Guttierez or Dario Brose? They're all done playing, at least at the first division level, and certainly have a resume that would appeal to both an AD and young players. All played at NC State when the Pack was an elite program and I'm sure they'd love to see them return to glory. What about Oliver Weiss? I know he just got to Blackburg but I highly doubt he'd pass up a chance to coach in the ACC or to go head-to-head with his former boss. How about someone following the Tom Fitzgerald model and go from having coached in MLS to college. A plum job like NC State might draw the attention of Dave Dir or Octavio Zambrano. (Fernando Clavijo doesn't have a degree so I doubt he'd get hired.) How about an MLS assistant like Brian Bliss (KC), John Trask (DC) or Denis Hamlet (Chicago)? Within the college ranks, I'd look at Bradley coach Jim DeRose, who has built the Braves into a power, American coach Todd West, who has brought the Eagles back to prominece or Farleigh-Dickinson coach Seth Roland, who took the Knights to the Elite Eight and Akron coach Ken Lolla, a Dookie who is also head coach of the US U16 team (soon to become the U15 team) and would thus have great access to top players. If current college assistants are to be considered, UVa's Craig Reynolds has been the top assistant since Arena left and is a great recruiter, UConn's John Deeley has been with Ray Reid for about 10 years and he is supposedly the tactical brains behind Reid's success (Reid is supposedly the motivator/organizer) and St. Louis assistant Mike Sorber, who has a nice resume as a player should all come to mind, though there are doubtlessly others.
what planet are you from John Tart from UNC-CH??????? This guy is pathetic. Have you seen his team play. And what goes unsaid, he is a laughing stock among good coaches, from top youth clubs through college, except maybe those few youth clubs that stay in good to get players in college. Watched Darren Powell coach for 2 years. There is no coach that would give more to the program, but he needs a few more years under his belt to take a top program. And isn't this all a moot point. Didn't GT just sign a new 5 year contract. And State athletic program is so far in the crapper in debt they will not buy out a minor sport coaches contract.
Interesting point on Oliver Weiss. I've wondered what the deal is with soccer coaches and their contracts. Can they just leave whenever they want to take another job, without recourse?
Powell, Jacobs and Weiss all have experience as assistants at strong programs and head coaching experience. Interesting comments about DeRose and Roland, who have both done great jobs with mid-major programs. I just can't believe guys with little to no experience (Ammann, Sorber, Ramos, etc) could even get any attention about a job like this.
Gotta agree with the notion of Lolla as a tremendous candidate for this job. Frankly, he's done all he can at Akron, which is a very difficult program to recruit for. If NC State were serious about the program, this would be an outstanding selection. Unfortunately, with as long as they've allowed Tarantini to engage in, what can only be regarded as athletic "aggravated menacing", I can't imagine they would be interested in changing under almost any circumstance.
