Just wanted everyone's opinion on who they think the new captain should be now that Kreis is learning mormanism.

I would say Pareja, but I don't know if he'll be on the team much less starting enough. So that leaves ROB, he needs to step it up vocally, but he does have what it takes IMO. Another option is Gibbs.

OMG I was just about to post the exact same thing--> totally not kidding!

He was captain during the San Jose game back in July when Jason was suspended... if its not Simo then I'm going with Ronnie.

Related, can he stay out of the book long enough to be considered a respectable leader?

Yeah he can English. Most kids are taught how to speak English from the grade schools and up. I even forgot to mention the fact that he played in England for quite a few years.

Only two real options for captain are Simo and Cassar. I think Simo since CC picks and they are tight...Simo is well respected by all and will do a good job.

Why is ROB not a real option in your opinion? Nobody leads by example better on this club, if you ask me. If we had 11 guys working as hard for 90 minutes as Ronnie does then we would have made the playoffs this season....I truly believe that.

Playoffs? Forget the playoffs more like the MLS and Open Cups.

For me Ronnie is not the right type of player to be captain. The captain imho should be someone who can lead & organise on the field. That is why most captains are goalkeepers or central defenders - people who have more time to see what is going on on the field & instruct. That is also why I think Jason wasn't picked for captain earlier. Forwards & wingers don't see the whole field as much. Plus Ronnie does seem to get frustrated a lot on the field. Captain should be someone who gets stuck in & inspires others through actions & words.

Simo for sure. He now has a season & the respect of his teammates. In regards to his yellow cards I think now with a season of MLS refs under his belt plus finally an off-season he should be able to improve on that score.

Good point about wingers not being able to see the whole field. On that I agree with you. Certainly Simo is an excellent choice, I just felt that ROB should be considered since, as far as I am concerned, is just about the only one on the team making the effort 100% of the time. Clarke shoud recognize this and by making him captain it will send the message that giving it your all for the full 90 is what is expected at FC Dallas.

Simo or Ronnie. Cassar is a stretch.

    Gibbs.

Emotion is what puts us over-the-top, and Gibbs can be inspired to grow his emotional capabilities by diplomatic, forward-moving displays of emotion - with officials, AND teammates.

Arguments can be made for Ronnie, Gibbs, and Cassar, but frankly I'll be shocked if Simo doesn't wear the armband next season.

Bringing back an old post for the new season...

The "Morrow/Fish tough love" article got me thinking about who the next captain should be.

    Looking at the roster:

As of now, the two main candidates I foresee are Rhine and Mulrooney:

    (1) On team experience alone, I'm thinking Rhine.
PROS: He's been in the league since '99 and has spent every year with FCD. He's played under each coach Dallas has had. There isn't another player on the roster that comes close to his experience on the team.
CONS: He has only been a two-year starter and has been used in a variety of positions throughout his career. Currently he holds down the right-back role, but it remains to be seen how Morrow will use him. Also, consistency seems to be an issue with him.

    (2) On MLS experience and playing ability, I'm thinking Mulrooney.
PROS: He is a league veteran, former all-star, former national team player, and MLS cup champion. Except for his time in Dallas, he has been a consistent starter each year he has been in the league.
CONS: Injuries have characterized his tenure thus far at FCD. He had a decent, but not spectacular, 2006 season (1 goal, 9 assists).

    On the Bubble: Ruiz, Sala...

My Take: I'm going to go with Mulrooney as captain on this one. You want your captain to not only be a good leader on the field, but also one of your team's top players. Successful captains are not only respected for their leadership capability, but also their playing ability. Throughout his career, Mulrooney has proved to be one of the best players MLS has produced. In addition, Mulrooney's center-mid position lends well to the captain role. I'm not saying that a right-back cannot be an effective captain (Think: Gary Neville), but in terms of communication, I think a central position is preferred.

Disclaimer: As a fan, it is almost impossible to know the true leadership qualities of these individuals. What occurs on the practice field, in the locker room, at team functions, etc. is so beyond me that who's to say that one of the younger players isn't poised enough to assume the captain role - Cooper perhaps [Think: Nigel Reo-Coker is captain of West Ham at the age of 22]. But it's fun to speculate and I guess that is what being a fan is all about.

Just mentioning Rhine as captain discounts your entire post. You need your captain to be one of the better players on the team and somone you know will be on the field 90 minutes every game so the natural choice would be Richard Mulrooney. He has won an MLS Cup, has a great work ethic and is someone the young players can look up to. Cooper would be an ideal choice as captain in a couple years times but it wouldn't make sense for this season since he could be missing a large chunk of the season playing in the Gold Cup or Copa America.

I don't see how you can overlook someone for captain who has been in the league and on the team as long as Rhine has. It doesn't matter what you, I or the rest of the BS community thinks of his playing ability. All that matters is what Morrow thinks of him. For all we know, Morrow rates him highly and plans to start him every game at right back. If that's the case, he's a top candidate. Is he the best candidate IMO? As my earlier post indicated, and you agreed, I think Mulrooney is the top choice.
