That's because the centenary (sp) badge is a copy of the old Chelsea badge. (Which was a copy of the Millwall team crest. Sorry, couldn't find a pic of it.)
looks quite nice i think. though the "100 years/centenery" above & below is a bit of a clutter. the badge itself i like, but i'd like to see it on our new Kit
It would look much beter without the footballs on the ring, other than that it's okay i guess. There's just something about it though, that just doesn't seem right.....
See I think the blue is a little off. It should be a little darker I think. The blue they use in that pic is a little too light. Anyone agree?
How about the redundancy of 100 years and Centenary? It's like admitting you don't know what a Centenary celebration is...
This is from the Chelsea website professor --- After much debate the club has nominated the 2005/6 season as the Centenary Year rather than the calendar year of 2005 itself. Many of you will know that 3 alternative dates in 1905 can be argued as the starting point for our 100 years: - on March 14 1905, Chelsea Football Club was founded at The Rising Sun pub (now The Greene Room) opposite today's main entrance to the ground on the Fulham Road; - on May 29, 1905, Chelsea was elected into the Second Division at the Football League AGM; - and on September 1, 1905, the first match took place away at Stockport County. The reason we have decided to officially make the Centenary Year the 2005/6 season is that it is the closest date to Chelsea's first match and 100 years since the club's first full season in 1905/6. However, we will also be recognizing the important milestones of the club's foundation in March and election to the League in May. --- So just let it slide, Jive Turkey.
Scrolls up looks at badge. Scrolls down and looks at the Clan Blue old badge. Scrolls back up to look at the new badge. Repeats this a good few times. Ponders. Repeats scrolling some more. Oh well, it looks better than the badge we have at the present, not as good as the old one Clan is sporting as his avatar, and not as good as the early 1970's one. But an improvement.
I think there is a small possibility that Sun, while arguably the most reputable paper in England, if not the world, is probably pulling a fast one here. I think that badge might be a little too complicated to print on a strip. Coulour depth and detail and what not. Mind you the old Arsenal crest was pretty "busy" so what do I know
You know, thats my all time favourite right there. Can't find it on the web anywhere though - don't suppose you have a link to one eh? (I'm taking it you mean the standing lion with the stars on either side)
So who's up on their Chelsea trivia? When and why did we come up with that badge? Dr I isn't allowed to answer
I think: The lion is from the Bourough of Fulham and Hammersmith Coat of Arms. The original owners of CFC, the Mears family, allegedly, had the copyright on the badge as shown in Clanblue's avatar. Therefore the new owners had to come up with a new badge, similar to the old one, so as not to lose the existing fanbase and kept the rampant type lion. The circular design is from the Mears' Coat of Arms, I think. That badge came about in the mid 1960s after the sale of the club. Am I close?
For some reason it seems as though I might be the only one who actually likes the one we have now. I like both though but I think I like the current one better... Plus, I couldn't go with an old school avatar and rip off Clan...
Well it is definably an improvement over the current one which is ****. I like the one that Clan uses as his avitar. I also like the simplified version as used on the 70's shirts. I think that it looks a bit flat compared to the older ones. A bit like the difference between a modern cartoon and the classic 40's Bugs bunny and Tom and Jerry, they just seemed richer in texture and detail. I have not replied sooner as I can't seem to get onto bigsoccer much these days it seems pemenantly engaged.
The early 70's badge is just awesome. I would love to see us get that one back and keep it. What is the deal is the skill of embroidery lost in this modern age?
Nice crests, though I agree that "100 Years" and "Centenary" is redundant. Minor quibble though. Simple and classy badge, the way it should be.
Cheslea TV have just had a big bit about the badge and at the moment they are having a phone in with Kenyon. I must say that the official images are better then the rough outline at the start of the thread. The Yellow border and the coulored roses and balls give it that depth I thought was missing. Things are looking up. For people interested in the History of Chelsea badges, here is a good link. http://www1.chelseafc.com/article.a...+-+The+Club&sub=History+-+Badges&nav=&sublid=
More great news from Kenyon, he has said there is no way we will have orange shirts next year. "In out centenary year the design of the shirts will reflect our history, and I am sure everyone will be proud of them" he added. Also Chelsea village will be scrapped and we will be known as Chelsea football club again.
